It's an excellent lens. Sharp, focuses well and quickly, and yields great results.

I love my 1.4 and it's relatively cheap...just buy it.

Canon really needs to come out with a new 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8. These two lenses are over 20 years old and needs an update like Nikon did.

Both need true RING USM (85 does) and the 5 cent weather sealing that Canon refuses to put on these.

Wait a few months and see what canons new 50 is like. That's what I'm going with atm.

Expect it to be in the $600 - $800 price range at launch tho...

Does Canon have a new normal lens actually in the works, or is it just a rumour/wish?

At the price, just get it. You can wait forever for new lenses. I had the 35L but sold it and now just use the 24L, 85L and the 50 works perfectly in between those for low light shots. I don't feel that I'm leaving any quality on the table with that one.

+1
And you can always listen to what others think - but I find that photography and the approach to creativity is an individual thing - a lens that I prefer not to use may be a lens that another person is simply mad about - and as a result they produce simply wonderful images with it - rendering the make and model simply a hollow label.

I say - make images, not endless anecdotal statistical data..... But that's just me. I can certainly respect those who share a differing view......

the 85 1.8 is an amazing lens. it has the purple fringing issue, but aside from that what more do you want? IMO it's one of the best bargains in the canon lineup.(much better than the turd 50 1.8)

to the OP, I'd have to recommend thinking hard about what you expect to gain from going 50 1.8 -> 1.4

if there is value there for you, then go for it. if it was me, I would just keep the 1.8 and only move on to the sigmalux or L.

maybe thinking to switch over to sigma 30mm 1.4.. which one is good? the new version or the old version? could this be like a walk around lens? or specifically portrait only? this is just for my family purpose... not making any money out of it..

I've had the 1.8 and 1.4 before and just got another 50 1.4. The size on my crop is just right for me (everyone is diff there), but as far as focusing I can say it's very noticeably faster than the 1.8.
Both take very sharp shots when dialed in, but I found it's much quicker with the 1.4 when you are looking for a quick candid shot. In my book, that's worth an extra $200.
I'm sure there are better but for $300 (currently New at B&H) show me something that compares ...

Well. if 50mm was one of my prime focal length, I would go over to the Sigma 50 f1.4 because it has many advantages over sharpness, bokeh, but only with focusing issue (known with Sigma's lenses). But for me, I only use my 50mm for everyday travel, street life, going out so I chose the 50 f1.4 because it's light, small (lighter and smaller than the sigma), though it's not good at f1.4, only until around f2.0 or so, but it's good enough for street life and that kinda stuffs :D.

So it depends on what your purpose, if you really want to upgrade a 50mm for portrait work, I think you would like to check out the Sigma 50 f1.4. But if you only shoot everyday activities, friends and families, I think the 50 f1.8 II will does the job quite well :). I still even have my 50 f1.8 II with me, sometimes using it on my 5D, don't want to sell it because it is so small, so light, and it can open up to f1.8 :D

Just a few stuffs, nothing much really.
