If you found yourself at the long end...

.....most of the time, what would you do?

Would you keep a 300 f4 if you had a 500 f4? Since getting the biggun I've not really touched my 300. If you were keen on landscapes and night shots would you chop in the 300 for a 24 1.4?

I'm missing a fast prime and I do find myself limited when indoors taking pics of family.

Oh yea, if I found myself "moving on" from a lens that I had used quite a bit previously, I'd sell it to acquire something else in a more useful focal range. Funny you mention this, as I have been thinking about acquiring either a 300 f/4 or the 400 f/ 5.6 sometime this winter.

There's no reason to own a lens you don't use.

Yup; especially if it's tying up funds that could legitimately get you a lens you WOULD use. I keep a Nifty 50 on the shelf, along with my old 40D, in case a family member or friend wants to experiment with shooting an SLR...but, if those would fund a new lens that I needed I'd sell 'em in a heartbeat

Depends what you use the 300 for. I use mine mainly for long macro-type shots. Insects, flowers, and close-range birds. A 500 (600 ideally) would not replace it for me, as it can't focus at 3 feet (with extension tube).

If you aren't using it, there's no reason to keep it, as said above.

I have put up my 300 F4 L IS for sale. This was a very difficult decision even though I have a 300 F2.8 L IS and a longer lens.
The light weight and close focus abilities of this lens make it a bit unique. If I am carrying my 800 F5.6 + associated tripod etc the 300 f2.8 is a bit of a pain to bring along while the 300 F4 is hardly noticed.
I will be sad to see mine go, make sure you don't regret selling yours.

I do have both 600mm and 300mm and personally, I would not sell my beloved 300mm. In my case 300 & 600 compliment each other and I use both of them frequently. They are different lenses for different purposes.

I do lots of hiking and traveling, and 300mm plus TCs is the best wildlife walk-around lens. I only bring my 600mm if I know where the spot I'm going and not much moving anywhere else.

Since you already have 1.4TC, I think it's best to keep it for a while. It can be very handy and useful in many situations.

When I switched systems, I found I was always at the 300 end of my 70-300 VR, so I bought a 400/5.6

As for indoors, I do have a 17-50/2.8, but would certainly consider a wide, fast prime.
