I need to light a group of 5 team mates. What would be a good light kit?

That depends...

What kind of picture are you trying to make?

I'm thinking something, maybe from a stepladder looking down at the 5. Center of the court.

There's a thousand different ways to do it.

How does the team want to be portrayed?

I would probably do a stylized, dramatic portrait with lots of contrast: Kill all ambient with in-camera settings; use a main light with a small modifier for relatively hard shadows, a fill light with a large modifier so the shadows aren't completely black, and an edge/rim/kicker light. Or, maybe instead of the rim light, I'd use several backlights on very low power, in the frame and pointed directly at the camera.
...but that's just my style.

It's still too broad a question to tackle it. There's studio, action, environment, portraiture, particular faces, how you're trying to convey them, how big you want to print...

Line em up against the wall and press the button! ;)

I think what you are saying, maybe what I am thinking. I like the idea of doing away with ambient light.

You don't always have to kill ambient, but the lights inside the gym are probably pretty gross.

I would discuss with the team first and see what they want. They might just want basic portraits without any highly dramatic styling.
