I'm a wedding photographer but have done only very little recording with my cameras and don't know very much about it yet.

Well, now it's ME getting married on Saturday. I've hired a photographer but would also like to set one of my 5D3's on a tripod and capture video. I tested this out yesterday with just the regular battery and a 32gb CF card. I wanted to see if both would last the hour or so I would need.

To my surprise, at about the 30 minute mark, the camera stopped recording. There was still plenty of room on the card and I simply hit record again and it ran another 30 minutes. I guess the recording hit some internal maximium? Is there some setting that allows me to adjust the maximum length of time I can record? I've not been able to find it in the menus; where is it?

Is there a way I can allow this camera to record for a full hour unattended?

Thanks.

No, the camera is time limited, either 4GB or 30 mins whichever comes first, so legislation as regards import duty on cameras and videos being different. A pain I know, is it possible to get someone to shoot for you.

This is what seperates a video camera from an DSLR that does video. There is a 30minute continuous cap.

A shame. No, no one can restart it for me as I had hoped to place it behind the altar. Hmmm, I'll have to come up with an alternate plan. Thanks everyone.

I know that Magic Lantern DID support "movie restart" which automatically restarts the recording once it hits the limit, but after some searching, it seems Magic Lantern may have taken this feature off due to fear of legal repercussion from Canon? Either way, I'd suggest checking it out. I have run Magic Lantern on my T3i and now my 7D, and I love it on both. Only ever had minor hiccups.

There is a way but its expensive, the latest firmware for the 5d3 allows for clean output via the HDMI port, which means you can use an external recorder and record for as long as you like, however most external recorders are not cheap, for example the Atomos Ninja 2 which is $700 for so.

His 5D Mark III does not stop recording after the file hits the 4GB size limit. It closes that file and starts a new one, without a frame being lost.

The 30-minute limit does apply, however.

According to the Magic Lantern Wiki (http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/HDMI_Output (external link)):

the HDMI output from the Canon HDMI is limited to 1620x1080 (3:2) while the camera is not recording...When the camera is recording, HDMI output resolution is limited to only 720x480

Canon built an incredible video camera, then crippled the hell out of it.

Edit:I can't tell from the Wiki page whether they are referring to the 5D Mark II or the Mark III.
