I just picked up a refurbed 7D and ran 2100 shots through it yesterday for an event. I have set it up to use BBF in AV mode. Occasionally when the camera isnt active for a few minutes (not sleep) and I get ready to take a shot, the focus button does nothing. Almost like the camera is in sleep mode and the only way to get it to work again is by hitting the shutter button. As long as I am constantly shooting, it seems fine but when it gets a little break in the action it seems to be non responsive but the viewfinder is still lit. It did it 4-5 times yesterday.

Second thing is the playback button to review images sometimes doesnt work as well. I have to hit it repeatedly to get it to work. Anyone else have this issue? Hoping its a setting somewhere and that I dont have a dud.

Thanks

I assume you are using the AF button to do the focusing, this button wakes my 7D from sleep mode. You say you have it set to BBF in AV mode, it will apply to all modes not just AV. It only reverts to the shutter button in Green Box, at least mine behaves that way.

Yes, I switched the AF to the * button like I have my 50D/30D/5D2 set up. Occasionally it wasn't activating the focus, like it was dead. Once I hit the shutter half press (AE) then it worked as normal. I know it affects all modes, just stating AV for background info.

Have to do some more testing with it. The playback button not working was annoying as well.

I've left my * button as is, and use the dedicated AF button so can't comment then on the problem.

You might want to reset the Custom Functions to their defaults, as well as reset the defaults in the Menu. Maybe even pull all the batteries and do a full reboot. Since it's a refurb, I'm guessing someone has set something up that's getting in your way.

When you swap the AF On and * button functions, the - zoom function of Image Playback swaps along with it. But the * button should bring the camera out of sleep mode (as should almost any of the "shooting related" buttons).

The Playback button (2nd from the bottom, LH side of the rear LCD monitor screen), is not an assignable button. I can't say why that's not working on your camera. (I have my Set button also assigned to do Image Playback. But this is in addition the usual Playback button, so I can recall the last image with either thumb.)

I just tested on one of my 7Ds and the Playback button also will wake up the camera from sleep mode.

The wake portion is completely normal for the 7D. I've gotten used to it and simply tap the shutter release every time I raise the camera up. The only time it gets me is when I'm shooting on a tripod and it feels like an extra step.

No idea what's going on with your playback button. I've never seen that.

Tapping the shutter activates the AE, shouldn't assigning the AE to another button allow that other button to wake the camera as well? I can get used to it if need be, I just want to make sure there isn't something wrong.

Thanks for that info.
