I been talking to a few people and they have suggested that sell my 60D twin lens kit and upgrade to a 7D. So I can get use to the main controls of the 7D before the 7D Mark II comes out next year. Is it worth the extra money now or should I wait until the new unit comes out?

Your 60D is failing to satisfy your photographic needs in what way? Maybe I missed that part.

Put another way, how do you expect a 7D to improve your photography? Or is the point just collecting gear?

Unless you need 19 point AF with its enhanced AF modes, continue using the camera and the glass you have, and once a new body comes out that really trumps the capabilities of your body+glass, then consider upgrading.

First, a 7DII has not been announce, it's still vaporware. Second, how do you know that if it does come out that the control set will be the same as the 7D and not the 60D? You could be lateral-grading only to find that the new camera has the same ergonomics as the 60D. Lastly, why spend money on basically a lateral move? Seems like there are no real positives and a bunch of negatives.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Agreed with everyone. Unless you really do need the faster frame rate and the extra focus points, going from 60D to 7D is just waste of money.

Going from 60D to 70D is a hard maybe but going from 60D to 7D is definitely no.

I wouldn't do that. I tried the 60D and 7D in the shop before I bought the 7D and I preferred the 7D as it felt more solid and was different when the shutter fired. However, if I knew then what I know now, I'd just have taken the 60D, in fact I'd have just kept my 600D, bought a battery grip and gave myself a slap on the noggin.

I wouldn't recommend that "upgrade", unless you can point to something you need, that the 7D can do better than your 60D.... For example, the 60D is good dealing with moving targets, action/sports... but the 7D is better.

However, if you were running up against problems with AI Servo/action photograpy, the I'd first point toward your lenses.... Those are where you'd see the most improved AF performance. In fact, if it were me I'd probably sell every lens you've got except for the 17-55, take the proceeds and get a Canon 70-200/2.8 IS II or 70-200/4 IS, and replace the 50/1.8 with an EF 50/1.4.

I agree with what's been said. I upgraded from a 50d to 7d for the improved AF performance for bird photography, but if that wasn't something that directly helped the specific kind of shooting I was already doing, I wouldn't have made the move.

Unless you are a pro photographer making a living shooting from a particular camera, feel free to upgrade to whatever you feel like you want.

As far as familiarizing yourself with the 7D's controls, I would suggest waiting until the 7D2 is announced, if such an announcement comes. You could do a lot worse than the 7D if you decided you just wanted it, but it's the same sensor as the 60D.

Life is short. If you can afford it and want it, get it. If you really want serious advice and not just a green light for GAS (which everyone has to some degree), keep the 60D until the 7D2 drops if you really plan on dropping the 2 grand (at least) for it, because it won't be cheap like the 7D is now.

For sure the 7D is looking like a bit of a bargain right now. Seriously considering one myself (with 15-85mm EF-S to go with it) to replace my 20D and 28-200. I think the improvements in focusing system and frame rate are quite attractive for the type of pictures I take, i.e. Motorsport and wildlife. Been kicking this particular tyre around for a while now, maybe in the New Year I'll take the plunge..

A 20D to a 7D is a very large step forward, a 60D to a 7D isn't. :)

I agree with the rest here. From a 60D it seems like a pointless move unless you have a specific feature you are after that you don't have on the 60D. The sensors are nearly identical (some say the 60D is sharper). The 7DII isn't guaranteed or even likely to have identical controls as the 7D so any "getting used to" would likely be completely wasted.

Don't get me wrong. There are reasons to have a 7D over a 60D but what you have described isn't one of them.
