I have Windows Vista running on an old Acer laptop. The laptop itself is in pretty good condition, but running quite slow. I have removed some of the programs I no longer use, but still not a lot of improvement.

If I take the laptop back to factory settings, would I lose all of the Windows updates I have downloaded over the years?

I should add this is not my main machine. I have a Macbook Pro Retina that I use for everyday use, including photo processing. This is just for use with my weather station software, which runs 24/7.

Any help would be very much appreciated.:)

Yes, restoring to factory settings will wipe everything out. You'll need to re-download all the updates, uninstall obsolete programs that came with the laptop 6 years ago, etc.

It won't take you 6 years to update it though:D

It might feel like it though. I'm not sure how many post-SP2 updates Vista needs since I haven't reloaded a Vista machine in a while. Even Win7 SP1 will still find ~140 updates to download and install in the first round.
