Hi,
I'm working on updating my products portfolio, and am soliciting opinions on what's most appealing to clients. I have a portfolio up on my site right now, but it's pretty dated, and my skills have gotten a lot better since then.

On one hand, I want to show off my improved skills in lighting/flagging/etc. On the other hand, the products that photographers know are most challenging, aren't necessarily the product that can best grab a client's attention.

I DO want to show off that I have a variety of different options to offer - not just the standard blown-white backdrop. White with no shadow, white with shadow, white with gloss reflection, black without reflection, black with high-gloss reflection. And, some products in a meaningful context.

I might want to get started with some simple food photos as well. Food is on my list of things to get good at, though I don't think I'm experienced enough to sell it yet.
Thoughts & opinions?

What's appealing to my clients may not be appealing to your clients.

First, you need to identify your potential client, and try to decipher how they make a purchasing decision. It may be based on your portfolio, it may be based on your pricing, or it may just be based on your relationship with them.

Once you've established that, you should focus on the biggest decision factor first and foremost. From there, it will benefit you to bolster the other aspects of the decision, but those should be less important.

This all seems straight forward, but is much trickier to decipher than you might think.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Good advice; I'm going to think long and hard about my target clients. My current pool of potentials & leads don't really have much need for product photos, but I want to expand that pool over the next year or two.

Some of the best product photographs I've seen were done in a garage. Not hard, just very time consuming.
