On the weekend I went to purchase some batteries for my 7D from sterling tek. I have purchased batteries from them before and had no problems but this time when I went to check out the site came back and informed me that the items that I wanted to buy were not available to ship to Canada.

Anyone else have this problem, or have I just done something wrong??

Anyone??

tks,

You can thank China wholesalers for constantly breaking the rules and creating unnecessary risk with mislabeled pre-charged lithium cells.

IsoMorphic: sorry, I don't recognize the reference. Do you know something about Sterling Tek inappropriately shipping batteries? I have never heard anything about problems with their shipping practices. A quick search on the net brings up a couple of references about them not shipping outside of the US/Canada and air freight restrictions, but nothing about ground shipping.

Still confused, but it does appear that there might be an issue with identifying lithium batteries on air shipments?

Kinda funny if that's the reason, we fly with all sorts of lithium batteries in our phones, laptops and tablets.

They switched from using Yahoo checkout, to amazon.com, and amazon.com does not
ship to Canada.

Companies do not want to ship empty Li-Ion batteries because empty Li-Ion batteries can't be stored. If they get a too low charge level, they become dangerous to charge so the supervisor chip will reject charging attempts.

I understand this but some vendors are topping them to full and using improper labels to get around regulations they agreed to follow. Not only that some vendors even began wrapping them in foil (even greater risk) to mask detection from scanners. We are already paying a premium for LI batteries so there is no excuse why large distributors can't follow the regulations or pony up for proper hazard handling. Every other industry has to do just that and does without screwing the consumer like the battery industry has been doing to us for decades.

Eastcoast the shippers are all cracking down and even seizing shipments of precharged LI cells. It has nothing to do with StirlingTek in particular just the type of cell being a big problem when it comes to shipping right now. There have been huge shipments seized and companies like Fastech have created a big mess for everyone.

OK, understand better now. Maybe I'll save up all my pennies (whoops! we don't use them anymore!) and take a trip down to the land of the Great Mothership BHPhoto in the spring.

I'm not sure if another vendor will ship to Canada, but Wasabi Power is another aftermarket battery supplier and I have had great results using their LP-E6. Sterlingtek or Wasabi... order a charger with the batteries. It seems Canon cahrgers do not like aftermarket batteries!
