Short documentary for my friend Douglas Tan, an amazing entrepreneur and self-taught head-barista of Tolido's Espresso Nook. It was a pleasure to work on a piece like this after having known each other for close to 9 years.

Check out their website at www.tolidosnook.com/ (external link)
Visit them at: Block 462 Crawford lane, #01-63, Singapore 190462

A collaboration between Tolido's Espresso Nook and Pandawithacamera.

For the gear nuts:

Shot on a Sony NEX FS700 with Canon Sigma and Tokina glass using a Metabones speedbooster adapter. Audio was Rode NTG-2 boomed with Sennheiser G3 wireless (I screwed up the placement and forgot to turn off some appliances so there's a hum, bummer. Lots to learn). Supported by Vinten Vision Blue set with some shots on Konova K5 slider.

Do you notice a difference if you have the image stabilizer off on the fs700? I have used it with and without it and don't see a difference. I was wonder if it was just me.

Nice little piece! I like the short length, it doesn't need to be longer. I like the statement at the end; good storytelling!

Thanks for sharing your production stills. Do get a headphone extension cable for your boom operator, a simple thing that will make shooting easier.

Missed that date in the original post.

Zexun, are you out there? How have your video projects been going?

When I 1st saw this vid I was hoping we'd get a follow-up one day. I was intrigued by the apparent coffee craze of the barista. Wonder if he's still as enthusiastic?

The folks at Tolido's Espresso Nook (the cafe name) are still going strong to date. We're band-mates from what you folks would probably call a high-school concert and wind band, and I literally am going for my last college paper in 7 hours' time. This short film was made before I even applied for any university. Time really flies eh?

It's not like you folks really want to follow a cafe from far away, but their instagram gets updates very regularly: https://www.instagram.com/tolidosnook/ (external link)

Been great, mate! Learnt a lot from freelancing and doing a vast array of productions since this gig I did as a passion project. It's still used as a reference for human-interest stories for clients nowadays when they want to go with the less corporate approach.

My youtube is at https://www.youtube.com/user/headshotzx (external link) although I rarely update it since I do a lot more crew and client projects that are shown elsewhere nowadays.

As said above, i'm graduating very soon, and I would love to do more passion projects like this cafe short in future. I've a few ideas in mind so hopefully my YouTube won't be this sparse for too long. I post more regular BTS stuff over at my insta: https://www.instagram.com/pandawithacam/ (external link)

Thanks for the kind words! We've since migrated to a much more efficient way of boom-operating with a separate mixer and wireless reference out into my camera, which went from FS700 -> FS7 -> FS5 now. I appreciate the advice and concern though! Am eying the Zoom F4 as a start for a decent sound kit.

The camera-side image stabilizer button does not affect the visuals unless it's an E-mount powered lens like Sony, Zeiss and Tamron etc. I do not use those. I prefer to use Speedboosters and EF-E adapters and Canon glass for my own gigs.
