From http://www.canon.co.jp …s5d/eos5d_firmware-e.html (external link) it seems that I cannot use my 4gb or 8gb cf card for the 1.1.1 firmware update:
"(2) CF card (8MB or more, 2GB or less)"

Yes I still have 1.1.0, and no I don't have a cf card smaller than 4gb.

My question: Is it true that I cannot update myself to 1.1.1 because of my lack small cf card?

It's been a while since I had my 5dc, but I used nothing but 8g cards in it for both images and upgrading without error.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I've had nothing but 4GBs in mine since I bought it and have done all the updates as well.

Now I've not had any 5D, but all other cameras I've had have worked fine when updating them from cards larger than the specification. I think it's just the limit for what they've tested with.

I remember a firmware update in the past (not sure if it was for the 5D or the 400D) but it was to support larger CF cards and it specifically said that in the release notes.

If the release notes claim that its to update the firmware to support larger cards then I would suspect that trying to do the update with a bigger card than the existing firmware supports might be a challenge.

But the question really is "what happens if it doesn't work?" It just won't work. I don't think it can damage anything. It just won't work.

So to answer the OP's question - Just do it. Sorry Nike ;)

My 5Dc still has firmware 1.1.0 on it and happily works with all my cards.
I normally use 4 and 8Gb cards with the classic, but just thought I would try the 32Gb ones that are normally only used in my mkIII, and they worked perfectly. So, I wouldn't worry about it, it should work fine with whatever size you want to use.

If 1.1.0 works fine with large cards, I can't see any reason why 1.1.1 would need small cards only. I never bothered to upgrade the firmware myself as I am an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of guy and the 5Dc always did everything I wanted it to without updating.

I've only ever used a 4GB card in my 5D and I'm fairly sure I did the update to 1.1.1 using the card method using that card. The "large card support" is to allow the camera to format larger (16GB I think) cards - under 1.1.0 I think it could use but not format them correctly.

The real value of this firmware update is support for certain lenses, notably the 16-35mm f/2.8 Mk II. You will find the exposure now takes account of the hot spot/vignetting, where it didn't before.
