Has anyone here used an FD lens with their EOS camera using an FD to EF adapter? Did it have the AF Confirmation and if so, how well did it work.

I've been looking at eBay and there are tons of them, all from China and Hong Kong. Some come with a lens and others without. Confused as to which would be the best. Is there one type better than the other? Is one brand better than the other?

What would your recommendations be? It looks like you can get some pretty good FD lenses way cheaper then their EF counterparts.

There is no good way to adapt FD lenses to Canon EOS SLRs, that's the harsh truth. Don't even bother, you can easily adapt M42,pentax K, Nikon, Contax/yashica.

If you still want to do it your options are

#1 use a glass-less adapter, which will just turn it into a macro only lens

#2 use a glass adapter, which will degrade the image quality and also act like a tele-converter I think it gives like 1.3x magnification. To go with your 1.5 crop factor already in place.

Or just pick up a Canon EOS M, thats what I did to use FD glass. Since it has no mirror it adapts perfectly, no image quality loss and you retain normal-infinity focus. All for just a $10 adapter.

oh yeah as for AF confirm, I have them on all my adapted SLR lenses for my DSLR. Surprisingly they have all been spot on. They only cost like $5 more than the non chipped so it's worth it.

What kind of FD lens are you looking at adapting? Ed Mika has made reversible lens conversions and adapters for most of the higher end FD lenses. I have one I use for my 300 2.8 and 600, it works fine and the lenses focus to infinity. The issue is his adapters aren't cheap so it's not worth adapting a consumer grade lens. Better off just getting a Rokinon, or getting an M42 mount lens if that's your goal.

The do work quite well however, assuming the lens itself is worth the extra investment.

Not sure what you mean by this.

Yeah, I would definitely want to go the AF confirm route.

What kind of FD lens are you looking at adapting?

I am looking at possible alternatives for less expensive but still fairly decent lenses.

what he means is it's not worth it to look at converting FD lenses to EF mount. if you are looking for a "deal" on good optics, look at what he recommended. you can buy a 10 dollar adapter of ebay and they will work on EF mount without issue.

What if I'm looking to convert a Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 Macro?

Maverick's suggestion #1 still apply? Since it's a macro lens, no impact on it?

It will make it more macro, not sure how much since im not into macro much. Im guessing it'll do 1:1, think it does 1:2 normally.

So a FDn to EOS M will mount right up to any EOS body?

Thanks in advance

No no no! only to the EOS M.

The M has no mirror so that's why it doesn't have the problems that the EOS DSLRs do.

No. Not with any EOS body.

It will mount up and work properly with an EOS M body.

The mirrorless camera has a much shallower lens to sensor plane register, so there's room for an adapter. That's not the case with any of the DSLR EOS bodies. They have a slightly deeper register than FD mount to begin with and adding an FD adapter on top of that just makes matters worse.

For more info about adaptering vintage lenses, see Bob Atkin's website (external link).

FD + Eos M camera is a great combo. If you seek manual lenses, the older M42 pentax lens are excellent low cost options.

The only decent choice for your digital SLR is Ed Mika.
