I have been trying to decide on a good walkabout lens, that will cross over for portrait work, I decided I dont need anything with a long zoom, does anyone use this for portraits?

It can be used for portraits on a crop body at 40mm...but the IQ is really not going to be as good as a prime lens.

You can certainly use it for portraits, just watch out for perspective distortion if that's not what you want (even at 35-40mm, if you're close enough, noses will be exaggerated).

Thanks a lot.

Greats shots, did you visit the bulding on the first one?

I would've liked to if it didn't look so unstable.

hello, well i have a question: does anyone find this lens a little dark? I am thinking of purchasing it later (well have to save up some money) but i am woried that it will be too dark for me? Maybe this problem could be solved with nifty-fifty?

A little dark? If you're talking about through the viewfinder, no, I haven't.

Or are you talking about low-light shooting ability? If that's what you're talking about, yeah, it was a bit frustrating with the 30D as I didn't like to use anything higher than ISO 800. Indoors, I usually used a flash with it or used the nifty.

i used mine today when it was very nearly dark and the lens performed very well indeed. It may be down to the ff sensor but i was well impressed.

Mine is useless in the dark without a flash. Not to mention the garbage camera I have makes it impossible to turn up the ISO and still produce a quality picture.

I am late into the game, but here is "5 missed calls" (f/4, iso 800, 40mm, 1/60sec). I promise I will be back with some landscape shots when I have a chance to shoot.

Let me know what you think of this. Even though it looks crooked to me I don't think it is?
