depends on what you're shooting. It's a fantastic lens provided you're not going to use your UWA for low light shots unless it's on a tripod (landscapes)... So if you're shooting parties or events inside with it, then the f/2.8 is a better lens, but if all you care about is a sharp UWA zoom, this is it. It's a landscapers dream because it's as sharp as it's f/2.8 brother (sharper than the first version), it's lighter and it's less expensive, but still weather sealed and still fast AF... Also the fact that it goes to 40mm has made it my perfect walk around lens.

The only real question is: Is the extra stop worth twice the price? ($1,449 -vs- $679!)

Yes the f/2.8 is a nice lens, but I'd rather have the $ for other lenses at this point. I'm also a landscape guy first so the extra stop isn't a big deal as I always have my tripod with me if needed and I prefer the lighter weight.

Could you tell me the settings yo used for this with the lens
I always thought that u need the most exp lens to get good nite shots or a very good tripod.

Sure thing. 17-40L @ 17mm, 30 seconds @ f5.6, ISO400. It was taken with my XTi. You will need a good tripod.

Nice photos Ben

I have thought a few times on parting with this lens but the results it provides make me quickly push that thought right out my head.

This was taken on a recent trip to Antelope Canyon. EXIF: ISO 100, F16, shutter speed somewhere around 2 seconds or so. The 17-40L captures a lot of detail, even in dark places. Full time MF also helps a lot in these types of situations. Unfortunately, converting to SRGB for web posting takes a bit away from the picture. Fantastic lens for landscapes, especially on a 5D.

These are my first shots with the 17-40L. I probably should have practiced more before going on a 2,000 mile trip.

I just got mine back from Canon. It was sharp before. But due to unknown sticky substance on internal element I had to send it in. They must have done something, cause its bloody SHARP now!

The 17-40L works great in daylight and low light...really captures the details on a FF body.

Not as wide as you'd like on a 20d, of course I didn't expect to be shooting the interior
of my mothers house, we haven't seen each other for a VERY long time and go together
when I was down in FL this past spring, but, the 17-40 still pulls in a lot of area, even on
the crop sensors;
Handheld as best I could, here are the details
Exposure time: 0.033 s (1/30)
Aperture: f/4.0
ISO equiv.: 400

kinda wild colours along that wall, but striking none the less,
