Just a snap with the new lens. I find at 17mm the corners are just grainy mush even at 7.1. Is that par for the lens, or should I be worried?

Thats about right- its corners at best at f13. Its worse at 17mm, at 20mm things improve dramatically, try not to go super wide all the time i know its tempting on FF but if there is something interesting in the corners its going to suffer.
It always used to be said that it was just part of the course for a wide angle zoom, then Nikon made that wonderful 14mm zoom and rewrote the rule book, i await Canons response move with great anticipation.

Anyway congrats on the purchase.

Amazing shot. Could you please link me to where I could find the nd filter setup you have? Assuming that's what you used. Thanks.

Thanks. I used a Lee CPL, Lee 0.6 hard grad and SinghRay 3 stop reverse grad.
I didnt use an ND, the CPL is worth two stops of light and i use iso50 so the shutter speed was pretty long from that alone.
Google lee filters, and for singhray its www.singhray.com (external link) they also have a great blog that links from their website, its a great read you should check it out.

Thanks for the comments and advice. I need it right now! I am a bit distraught. I bought a super cheapo "vivitar 19-35mm" lens for $57 on ebay about a month ago after reading a lot of praise for it from POTN's own "thatkatmat" and others in review sites (actually, he had the tamron, but cosina, Promaster, tamron, Phoenix, and Vivitar all just rebranded the same glass). I loved it! I had so much fun I decided to shell out $700 for the "real thing". Now I'm quite horrified! After comparing the Vivitar and Tamron at 19, there is almost no difference. The Vivitar actually has much better corners at wider apertures, and is half a stop brighter wide open (F3.5). I have no doubt the Canon can crush it at longer focal lengths, but one reason I bought the canon was for the extra width...
Anyway, I'll work with it for a couple of more days and hopefully I'll come to appreciate it's strengths. So far I've barely used it from 20-39mm! Guess I had better start exploring that range.
