Aircraft coming or going is a relatively common photo. But getting that smoke shot is a split second opportunity at 120 mph.

Let's see your best smoke shots and be a show off with your quick trigger finger.

How do you do it? Got any tricks of the trade to make it easier? What about the optimum lens (one that we can all afford) and ISO speed?

Here's one of mine at Glasgow Airport June 2005. Canon 300D, 75-300mm USM, 100 ISO, wide open about 1/640th sec, hand held with elbow resting on my knee.

An remember - Cuzzin is lookin for good British aircraft shots for his gallery site. So once you've been a show off here... c'mon over here. (external link)

Yer plainly mad Cousin.

Best I could find quickly is this one - only a nosewheel smokey but not bad.

Hey J,

Now that is something you don't see often... a front wheel smoke job. Must be difficult for she'll run quite a ways down the runway before the front hits.

If you have any Brit aircraft shots taken down under mate... please do send them along to our UK database site (external link).

Cuzzin who never thought of front wheel smokies.

A brace of smokies from me :) Both taken at Biggin Hill last year. My technique is pretty simple, I pan with the aircraft and just before the wheels hit tarmac I fire the release with the camera in machine gun mode. :) 20D + 100-400LIS.

The first one, technically, isn't smoke, but I still dig it:

I don't get to take pictures of aircraft very often, so the Blue Angels is all you get...

Just found another that just about qualifies for inclusion in this thread. Again taken at Biggin Hill last year. Spitfire fireing up it's Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Check out the smoke ring :)

Har,

I guess that is what I had intended... but... not being one to be narrow minded... this is turning out to be rather interesting...

The A10 lettin go with the Gattlin gun is certainly a smoke shot.

I am suitably impressed.

Cousin

I am not complaining...I do like them all, but the wheel smoke shots are what attracted me. It has turned out well, though!

Nope Rob,

Please keep them all here. I had in my own mind thought of smoke shots as landing... but I have been proven wrong hahaha.
