Well, you got me - what gives it away? I'm not familiar with UK pricing - is it ludicrously cheap, or something else?

For the life of me I can't see what's wrong with that Birmingham ad, what am I missing ? But the St Ives one is so bent it's untrue. I had great fun on email with them before finding this thread asking them pertinent questions about their seaside home. (I'm very familiar with the place)
You could almost see them Googling the answers so I started to put a time limit on responses.
This really annoyed them.

They've never been to St Ives, they've never been to London, they ain't even in Britain and they've never touched a 5d mkiii. It's nothing to do with a camera it's to do with theft. Stealing someones money.

Naturally I would have immense sympathy for anyone on the losing end but Gumtree are EXPLICIT in how to use their site. Deal in cash, face to face and locally. The 5d ad has none of that.

Anyway, I might start emailing them again from a different address, I've got time to kill. I wonder what I can get them to do ?

OK you are going to have to explain that one to me as well.I live in the UK ,we have a MAJOR recession,Christmas very shortly and the visa bills will be dropping through the letterbox in January - people ARE desperate.
The only thing i would say is go and see it and agree the sale when you see it.

The Handsworth one isn't even particularly cheap. HDEW, who include a three year warranty, are doing the body new for £1,889 and the lens for £75 so including the spare battery, the saving against new grey import gear is maybe £250.

I checked the shutter count photo and noticed the serial # is 13. I've never seen that before. If I recall correctly when I checked the shutter count (looks like EOS count) it provide a longer serial #.

yes, very cheap, but the real giveaway is the fact it is also being sold in Australia :

with respect, you are missing two things - firstly, the poster is new.
Secondly, no email reply possible, phone only, that's two red flags.

That should encourage one to try a reverse image search, which will lead you to the original, genuine ad here :

I'm just gently trying to make the point that scam ads are not always that obvious, and that people who fall for them are not always stupid.

And if a scam ad is obvious, it is made obvious deliberately by a more experienced scammer.

agreed, but you pay my airfare to Australia ;)

seriously, the moment you suggest visiting the seller, they cut off all further communication. They are no longer interested in discussing it, for obvious reasons.

I'd be interested to see what people make of this email from a scammer : it has one mistake in it that shows it is not UK as the scammer pretends, but what do you all make of the email address ?

"Hello, If you are interested please contact me at my email address MeganBailey12@nhsraigmore.org (external link), and we can discus the details. Gumtree email system is awful. My regards. Megan Bailey / NHS Raigmore Head Nurse, in charge of emergency room "

Feel free to take a look at nhsraigmore.org

these scams are fairly common on Craigslist. Where they create a generic jumbled listing that gets through the filters, but the pictures contain the contact info and the scam.
