70-210 F4?

I found one of these on Craigslist (bundled with another Canon lens and film camera) for $60. Curious to know if anybody has a good or bad opinion of it. I currently have a 55-250 IS and borrow and/or lust after a friend's 70-200 2.8 non IS. Would this old lens be worth the $60 or am I better off just using my 55-250? I think it may be a macro lens also, and I don't have one of those yet... Anybody got one and like or hate it?

What Mount is it do you want to use it on the Film body or a Digital SLR ?

Take a look at Ken's review here. They were late 80's early 90's lenses if I remember correctly.

Had it a couple times. Pretty nice little lens.

it depends, the 70-210 3.5 is better and has usm. the f4 lens is a push pull, vs the 250 lens that you have, the is is better for indoor low light, but the 70-210 3.5 is a better sports lens. the 70-210 3.5 gets a little soft over 150mm, but is probably the fastest focusing telephoto.

If you already have a 55-250, then don't bother unless you REALLY need f4 at 210mm. The 70-210 f4 is one the original telephotos. It has good, but not great optics. Slow and loud arc-drive AF and push/pull zoom action like the 100-400L.

If you didn't have a telephoto, it is not a bad one, especially for that price. But I can't see using it over your 55-250 in very many situations.

It's not a macro lens.

Canon made both a FD 70-210mm f/4 and a EF 70-210mm f/4 back in the film days.

Make SURE it is an EF mount or else it will not fit your EOS DSLR camera, and yes, the 55-250 IS is a better lens.

Yes I asked that as I have a FD Mount one that's of no use to me .

It's the EF mount F4 lens. I'll be using it with my 60D.

There's also a 35-80 that I plan to hack and use as a macro lens.

Not a bad kit all, be sure to use it with film also. It's a cheap way to shoot full frame

That's one thing I do love about the canon EOS system, I can use the same lenses on my 35mm camera, my DSLR and my mirror-less. All with perfect autofocusing and metering!

Don't bother with any of it. Just order a 500D or Marumi 330 close up lens for your 55-250 IS. You don't want all that junk in your kit.

I already have a 60D so why would I order a 500D? Nevermind, I thought you meant the camera, not the lens.

Canon 500D and Marumi 330 are high grade achromatic close up lenses. When used on your 55-250, they will let you shoot real macro, but you'll have some workable working distance. A hacked 35-80 is worthless due to the non existent working distance

the 420EZ is of no use on digital cameras. The 70-210 is not any better than your 55-250 and the 35-80 is garbage. If all you want is cheap macro, get a 58mm achromatic closeup lens for your 55-250.

Its a decent lens for its age. Cons are slow focussing, and really bad contrast if shooting backlit subjects as the rear element has no anti reflective coatings at all it seems. Pros are it's cheap, a decent amount of zoom, has some macro abilities and good copies can be very sharp. Lastly if you like long exposure zoom effects, the push pull zoom makes it very interesting.

Depending how cheap it is, it's not bad, but I think many modern kit lenses will match most of its qualities.

For $60, you would get a macro (hacked 35-80), a decent but not great tele zoom (can be sold for the $60 or more on ebay), and a really good off-camera manual flash. Personally, to some it may be junk, but I'd buy it for $60 all day long. You could sell the two lenses on ebay as a set for $150+, (I''ve done that exact set for $169), and the flash for about $40. The camera itself was a great camera in it's day, but has little to no value now. It's a great body to hang onto if you think you may want to shoot film. It was my first AF Canon (in 1988).
