Roger @lensrental did in his very controlled tests:

Cheers.

Very interesting, seems I would lose very little taking the second hand Bigma and saving the $$.

mccamli, that is one super sharp copy of the 100-400 you have there! lol!

Enjoy Tuesday, it looks like I'll have to wait some time yet, still no idea when it's going to be available here.

I have the distinct advantage of my 100-400L only existing in my imagination and, at the moment, damn it's sharp. I'm hoping my real copy of this lens will beat it without having to resort to alcohol to make my 100-400L fuzzy!

I'm really hoping that combined with a Sigma 50-150 it's going to be useable enough for me to replace my 70-300L ...time will tell.

To me the difference between the Tamron and the Bigma seems significant. Or at least there is a significant drop between the Tamron/Canon and the other two lenses at 400mm.
But I did own the Sigma 150-500 in the past and I really liked it, took my first descent wildlife images with it.

Kirk, here's the one BiF shot I managed to eke out while I was out shooting yesterday. Conditions were, as you can see, pretty bad (foggy, backlit and dark), and this was rushed (was totally shooting a different direction and had to respond to "there's the Eagle flying, over there!", turn, acquire and shoot). That said, the one shot I caught came out pretty well, IMO.

While I do still have concerns about the usefulness of this lens for dedicated BiF shooting (I think I'd still roll with the 400 f/5.6 for that), this thing is certainly capable of nabbing the incidental IF shots.

Edit: Shot was cropped to improve subject framing and get rid of extraneous crap.

 I was there too, I was watching you from the other viewing platform when you suddenly aim in the eagle's directions.

OK, now that the Broncos have won, I have time to post these :)

You've seen the original photos from Eric (on p. 13 I think)

These shots are courtesy of Eric. While here the difference is harder to see, in Photoshop the difference is more visible when these photos are in one multilayer image and aligned. Switching between layers reveals the differences.
I leave the judgment to you guys, I'm just the messenger :)

Thanks for this comparison Gabe.

I'll never know for sure until I try the lens myself (and who knows when it will be available here) but so far, some samples, even at 600mm f/6.3, definitely match what I was hoping for. I consider these samples as a good reason to try it. I dismiss the bad samples as a reason not to try it.

Eric (snydremark) awesome capture! Was that the only shot you got off, or were there others of the eagle that just didn't come out? I think I've just moved myself up to 95% sure I'll be getting this lens. With the review at lensrentals, I'm now at 99%. :)

That was the only shot I got before it flew behind the trees; which is pretty good, in my book. I'm used to the second or third shot being the better shot with the 100-400.
