Hi all, I am from Ukraine and I am shooting birds for already half a year and it's come time to get good lenses for my body 5dmk3. Unfortunately, the prices of lenses are not that they have to be in my country.
For example:
Canon 400mm f/5.6L EF USM - 1316$
Canon 300mm f/4.0 L IS EF USM - 1350$ + Canon EF 1.4x Extender III - 511$ = 1861$
Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens Canon - 1630$

What do you think I have to choose for bird photography and wildlife only (and why)?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

It really depends on where [city park / Zoo / open country] , what [LIttle birds / big ones] when [LIght wise morning / evening / full sun] , how strong you are - is lens weight a factor ? Lenses you already have .
I am waiting on the 150-600 , but I already own the 70-200 mk II + 2 X III , 70-300 macro and the 135-400 .

Bad side? Considering the Canon 400 is an L prime it compares fairly well.

How well does the 400 zoom?

I will recommend Tamron 150-600mm for me it is a total package for what you are after. I have EF300mm and 1.4x TC and love it for BIF, and also you can do a lot of things ex by adding extension tubes good for macro etc. But now that Tamron addressed the issue on AF with the new firmware I feel Tamron 150-600mm is the total package for wildlife photography without breaking your bank account.

Ok, now zoom in to 600. Oops, the Canon (400 prime) doesn't do that. Now zoom out to 150. Oops, it doesn't do that either. Now turn on the stabilization. Uh-oh.

Okay, the Tamron's IQ sucks towards 600. Compare the Canon at 400, to the Tamron at 500, both at f/8. Pretty close. So, you get 100mm more in useable range, for $600 less. And you can still go to 600mm if you need to.

I'm not saying the 400 prime and 100-400 are bad lenses, because their not.

Have you considered other telephoto zoom lens like Sigma 50-500, 150-500?

It is a known fact that the Tamron drops off above 400mm

....but, again, the 100-400 does not go to 600. With a TC, it will be worse than the tamron, across all ranges.

Yeah, I've considered them. They are times worse than Tamron.
