Nice one Pat. I will try this tonight he he. I might also try to put again my 2x TC and do a manual focus.

That looks like the same issue I have when I take moon shots. I have a somewhat lacking tripod and get a lot of camera shake just due to the size and weight of the lens.
I had asked Santa for a tripod for Christmas, but I must have been a bad boy because he did not bring it.

You know I bring it with me but it never makes its way to the camera. I don't use it as much since I got the Tamron.

That's interesting. Even after buying my 150-600, I still wondered for quite some time if I'd made the right choice. The IQ of the 400 prime is so darn tempting.

I got my answer not long ago when I was photographing wildflowers and a spider at 600mm, hand held at about 9 feet. I realized that not only could the 400 5.6 not focus that close, even if it could the spider would still not fill the frame and I'd probably never pull it off hand-held.

About a month ago, a fellow birder had a 400 5.6 prime and was interested in my Tammy. I suggested we swap lenses for a little while, which he gladly agreed to. I shot with his prime and he with my Tamron. After we both reviewed the shots in the field, he boldly stated "that's it, I'm selling my 400 and getting one of those!" ha, ha. That made me happy.

I think I made the right choice. :D

Shoot first and ask questions later.

You may need to explain to Mrs Santa how important a good tripod is to photography; I recommend dropping hints about once a week for a while, then increasing this to some technical rambling just before your birthday. Worked for me. ;)

Mrs Clause does not understand the difference between a tripod and a pointy stick. But I will definitely see what I can do since I still have some time between now and my birthday.

Guys, I have a question/request.

Those of you who use the Tammy with a 5DIII, does your center AF point behave oddly with the Tamron when trying to AF on something bright (but with good contrast), e.g a sunlit telephone pole, a light door etc? Again, there is plenty contrast, I'm not trying to focus on something uniform without any texture or contrast.

My 5DIII does that, only with the center point; it often hunts back and forth when trying to AF on a brighter subject. Hunts back and forth, gradually AF-ing closer and closer to me, then gives up.
Any other AF point works perfectly. 70D works perfectly with all points, including center. I presume my copy is a newer one even though it's refurbished. My copy does not have the AF problem my first-batch copy had a year ago, so it must have the updated AF firmware.

Has anyone experienced this phenomenon with a 5DIII center point?

My Mrs. Claus gave me a new tripod this Christmas and I couldn't be happier with it. My in-laws got me the cheap Opteka gimbal head and that thing is actually really sweet.
Never knew just how much a stable tripod was a joy to use.

Great pictures in this thread. Looking forward to owning this lens. Don't hear too much about getting a bad copy either.

I think since the firmware update most people, and I have been watching, have been reasonably happy with the lens. There is definitely a learning curve dealing with a lens with the range of this beast, but once you start to get the hang of it's capabilities, it really has proven to be quite a lens. Not just for the price, but period.

Guys, another request.

Could you post your serial numbers (I don't need the last 3 digits so you can put xxx for the last 3), and also post the date when you received/purchased it.

thank you!

Decided to go to usual spot late in the afternoon yesterday and light was fading fast when I took this picture hence the ISO is 800. Bumped up the shadows and controlled noise with Dfine2.
