I've found that quite a bit of what makes a pic is post processing.
Obviously PP can't turn crap into gold but it can brush away the dirt that
lies on top of a decent image revealing a nice photo underneath.

I'm guessing it would be a little too slow? I'm interested in this as well.

So if anyone has tried this I would like to know

So if anyone has tried this I would like to know At ~$1500 a 300 2.8 sounds great, but don't forget it's going to be near impossible to find replacement parts for it and/or find somebody who would repair it. Not to mention it will cost a lot to fix if something goes wrong. Go for it if you feel brave enough, but personally I would go with a newer lens. The 100-400 would be great, but I'm not sure if you would want something faster (for thin DOF and AF performance) like a 300 f4 IS etc. I'm not sure how the AF performs on the Tamron 150-600 for sports (like many of us). amyandmark3 Goldmember More info | ^^ Unfortunately, 300 2.8's (non-is) don't cost $1500 in the USA or I'd have one right now. More like $2500 +/- currently unless they're a real beater. Makes the risk of repair even more significant. Mark

I have the 70-200 ii and the 1.4 iii which gives me a pretty good 100-280 IS F4 so I haven't bought the 300 F4. But if anyone knows about the tamron and sports let me know

It seems everything new is ridiculously cheap in the U.S (especially with rebates) but used everything is much too expensive. But if anyone knows about the tamron and sports let me know $3500 seems to be roughly the going rate right now. Of the four I have seen sell, one went for $3330, another for $3400, then $3550 and $3650. They all looked to be in great condition. I always find backlit situations to be challenging. I'm continuing to enjoy learning the nuances of this lens, and I'm certainly enjoying the extra reach!
