I've found that quite a bit of what makes a pic is post processing.
Obviously PP can't turn crap into gold but it can brush away the dirt that
lies on top of a decent image revealing a nice photo underneath.

Anyone have an idea how this lens would do for sports Photography? I'm guessing it would be a little too slow?

I'm interested in this as well.

I'm looking to either buy this, a used 100-400 or somehow convince my wife that we should get a 300 2.8 (obviously very old and used...but fast) for taking pictures of kids field sports. So if anyone has tried this I would like to know

At ~$1500 a 300 2.8 sounds great, but don't forget it's going to be near impossible to find replacement parts for it and/or find somebody who would repair it. Not to mention it will cost a lot to fix if something goes wrong. Go for it if you feel brave enough, but personally I would go with a newer lens. The 100-400 would be great, but I'm not sure if you would want something faster (for thin DOF and AF performance) like a 300 f4 IS etc. I'm not sure how the AF performs on the Tamron 150-600 for sports (like many of us).

^^ Unfortunately, 300 2.8's (non-is) don't cost $1500 in the USA or I'd have one right now. More like $2500 +/- currently unless they're a real beater. Makes the risk of repair even more significant.

Yeah I'm likely not going to go for the 300 2.8 non-is...trying to convince her we need the 300 2.8 IS but used those are at least 3500. I have the 70-200 ii and the 1.4 iii which gives me a pretty good 100-280 IS F4 so I haven't bought the 300 F4. But if anyone knows about the tamron and sports let me know

Wow, that seems excessive. It seems everything new is ridiculously cheap in the U.S (especially with rebates) but used everything is much too expensive.

$3500 seems to be roughly the going rate right now. Of the four I have seen sell, one went for $3330, another for $3400, then $3550 and $3650. They all looked to be in great condition.

I suggest getting a zoom first and shoot a few thousand pics (shouldn't take long; I take ~2500 shots each day at the racetrack) to see what focal length you use most. This can be done in Lightroom. The 150-600 is great in the sense you can do 300mm, 420mm and 600mm (combinations of TC's on a 300mm prime).

Go back to the start of the thread :D Lately it has been people talking about AF performance among other things.

Here's a little Carolina wren I caught yesterday -- the first sunny day we've had in a while. I always find backlit situations to be challenging. I'm continuing to enjoy learning the nuances of this lens, and I'm certainly enjoying the extra reach!

Well, that is just lovely! Looks very good indeed, Illume.

Also, I have a request. Would you be so kind as to also post some of your images in the actual Image Sample section of the forum? Here is the thread: https://photography-on-the.net …48082&highlight=150-600mm
because that is where people will look for images made with this lens as it is the dedicated image sample thread. All the other threads are discussion threads that also happen to have some images. If you know what I mean?
Thanks!

Sure the perch is good, Craig! The city and the world of people is where these bold little rascals live, so, the perch is perfect! And a fine sample of what this lens can do.
