Someone should start a new thread with just images rather than pages of chat.

The last word in the title of this thread is---"images".

That "already is one" thread has more text than images as well; so I'm doing my part to defeat the purpose of this thread, by adding even more text.

LW

well this one is posted in the discussion section of the forum...that other one really shouldn't have any chatting posts...pm a mod to have them delete/ask people to only post images in the archives thread...

Hard to decide between Tamron 150-600mm and Canon 100-400mm

Let me give you my thoughts. i owned the 100-400 for a few years, not thrilled w/IQ but rented other copies and it was fine for my purposes. I've had the Tammy 10 days, done limited shooting due to bad weather etc.

As far as IQ, focusing speed, handling etc, I find no big difference.I've read a lot of threads arguing one way or the other and complaints about the focusing of the Tammy in AI Servo. I'm not going out on a limb and saying the Tammy is "better"...just a toss-up. let's say price is the same, eg, if you thought the Canon was much better, you'd spend the extra $$.

So the question is: What are you using the lens for?? Can you use the extra reach from 400 to 600mm?? I've been shooting mostly wading birds and waterfowl. Even that can be frustrating if I'm home up north and the birds are far away. Attached is a shot of a Red Breasted Merganser I took yesterday. Tamron 150-600 @ f8.0 600mm. These are shy ducks and I never could have gotten this shot(or dozens like it) w/the 100-400L. (BTW, I don't use converters on zoom lenses.)

Now, one neg. for me is weight. The Tamron is heavy for me. But even though it's 1/3 heavier than the Canon, it doesn't feel that much different...I can't really handhold either and need to use a monopod. (This shot was from the car window, leaning on the edge, VC "on")

So I guess you know I'm happy w/my choice. Good luck.

Tamron 150-600 600mm F 8.0 1/2000 ISO 800 VC On sharpened, clarity adjusted in LR

On the contrary I think they got it right, in terms of manufacturing a good lens at a competitive price - that's why it's sold out.

From a marketing standpoint its "genius" - low supply infers a high demand! Looks good to outside observers/consumers and they do not have surplus inventory.

Or they stalled production to get some kink worked out?

well, they couldn't predict exactly how popular the lens would be when released. Rather than have an oversupply, they under estimated, now they have to catch up. My guess is that the unit profit is pretty low on this(compared to Canon for an L lens) but they did gamble that they'd make it up on high volume. So I think that they were not bragging when they market this lens as "Revolutionary".....the tech is by no means revolutionary, but the idea of putting a 600mm lens into anyone's hands who can spend 1K IS.

BTW VC on this lens does not "automatically" sense (reliably anyway) that the lens is on a tripod (and I presume monopod too.) TURN IT OFF if you're not hand-holding.

I still leave it on with, a tripod, depending on the shutter speed. If it's slower, the IS does help me get sharper images. Mainly at 400-600 focal lengths.

that's not my conclusion. If you are on a tripod that is rock solid(or on a rock for that matter) with no movement, I agree, you must turn VC off or it will introduce blur. I've always used IS/VC on a monopod, especially with lens 300mm+ because there is discernible movement. you can see the movement "freeze" when VC clicks in.

If you shoot on a tripod with a ball head that's not locked down, or a top a center post that's elevated above the tripod collar, and not using remote shutter release ,you may also have movement. I shoot that way because I cannot hold up the weight of the lens and want to be able to move it around easily to recompose. I have tested it and found that VC will not hurt and can help. I'd encourage users to consider how they shoot and do their own comparisons.

With this lens, I have to disagree***; I stared getting much better shots with VC + tripod than with either one alone. So, I'd recommend trying both and seeing what works best with any, individual kit.

One of my images from last Saturday. Could be better, but came out ok. Is more my fault than anything, for too slow of shutter speed/ect.

Looks pretty darn good to me, what are you complaining about? No need, really.

Cheers.

I think it probably more of a case of what I guessed before it was released and what I speculate now. The lens has become highly popular and keeping it on the shelves has become nearly impossible. Supply will eventually be able to keep up with demand I'm sure, just not at the moment it appears.

Thanks guys. Well, more so saying that I could have been a little more careful in my focusing and ISO/Shutter speeds. But it came out pretty decent I guess. Yeah, it's quite difficult with the back-lighting, I'd say maybe even more so with full sunlight.

At least, if you want to try and get a nice dynamic range, but you can only do so much. I just gotta push the exposure to almost over now, like people have said/what I read.

Also, I found that even at F/8, I have to make sure to focus on the eye as best as possible, because focusing on the breast area can already put the eye outta focus.
