None. Presets should be used for specific purposes and reasons, if in doubt just make nice well exposed, color images.

I would tend to agree. However, when I first got into light room, I found this tutorial very useful in understanding where to tweak. However, after a while realised the preset did not suit all situations and stopped using it.

Presets are, well, presets -- pre-defined settings that may or may not meet your needs.

The good news is that presets can be adjusted, very simply in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw, since they show up as slider adjustments (it can be more complicated dealing with Photoshop Actions an multiple layers and such).

So, as has been mentioned, try some presets, find something that approximates the effect you are after, then tweak to "fine-tune" it. From there, you can save a new preset that may come closer to what you are after!

I myself am not a preset user, but if I was that's the approach I would take!

Just so you know, though, portrait shooters who use Lightroom as their "main" app have been getting a lot of mileage out of using Local Adjustment brushes for things like spot healing and dodging and burning...!

I would't use presets. I would edit to your style and treat each photo unique.

I totally endorse the above suggestions about focusing on getting a good clean well exposed, richly colored looking image rather than shoveling all of the images through a filter that may look ridiculous in 3 years. Think: timeless.

That said, I use presets in LR in the following ways:
1) for setting up defaults (I up the contrast and vibrance a little; I tweak the 'detail' panel for different ISO)
2) setting up my basic B+W conversion (with a bias toward the orange and yellows--best for portraits in my experience)

Depends on what you wish to achieve.

Sounds like you haven't tried to find yourself as an artist yet.

Build a style of your own.

Don't copy others.
