With the snowstorm outside I was looking for an inside project and decided I would give drops a try.

Well...I tried Haha. Not great but I learned a bit for next time.

I noticed when I looked at the pics in Lightroom that there was "ghosting" for the lack of a better term. Basically double drops and shadow edges. I don't know what could have caused this. Maybe the flashes weren't in sync?
Any ideas?

I used 1 Yongnuo flash on either side of the drop (2 total). Both were set to manual at 1/16 power about 8-9 inches away from the drop.
I did have a small cfl light on to help see what I was doing but it wasn't pointed directly on the work area.
Camera settings were: f/16 135mm 1/250sec iso200
Cropped and tweeked in LR5 & PS-CC

Thanks for looking and any help you can provide.
Brian

Definitely looks as if the two flash units were not firing at exactly the same time - so, in effect, you got a 'double exposure'. What mode were you using on the Yongnuo units? I have several of the YN-468 units myself. For this type of image, if I were to use more than one flash, I would use 'Manual' mode and fire via trigger units (such as Yongnuo RF-602 series).

I'm guessing that you used one of the 'Slave' modes - so that what happened is that one unit fired from seeing the other.

Also, 1/250 may be a bit fast for synching with the flash units - 1/125, or slower, might be better - although, with two flash units, you might get 'streaks' instead of distinct drops.

How about a single flash unit and a reflector on the other side, instead of two flashes?

Experiment .... after all, you have all winter. ;)

The beginner clicks the shutter and says "Let's see what I got." ... The experienced photographer thinks "How can I capture what I see?"

Thanks for the reply GJim.

I was using one YN-565 EX attached to a RF-602 trigger and one YN-560III using it's built in RF mode.

Each flash was in Manual mode set to 1/16 power positioned at about 7 & 4 o'clock of the drop.

I had a piece of white styrofoam sheet as a reflector on the right side.

I think next time I will try the one flash and see if that eliminates it. If so then it probably is the timing between the two flashes causing it.

Thanks again for the advise. Like you said, I have all winter :-)

I'm expecting I'll get around to playing with something similar sometime in the new year. I was already planning to switch to a wired setup (because wireless transmitters in such close proximity don't always play nicely anyway), but now I'm wondering if flash sync gets any more reliable or not by ganging them off a single PC port.
