So, I've decided to upgrade my "arsenal" with the 5D3. Obviously looking for a "deal", I stumbled across ibuysonline with a price of $2639 (body only), and 42nd Street Photo at $2699. I've at least heard of 42nd Street before. My question is, has anyone ever dealt with either of these outlets. Not super crazy about buying online, but I'm also not crazy about the extra 7-800 it'll cost me to buy from the brick and mortar dealer about 40 miles up the road. Any advice? If you've got a smart remark about "looking for a deal", or not buying it if I can't afford it, etc, save for another day. Just asking for some honest, common sense input.

Check out the Canon refurb store, they now come with one year warranty. Then find a junk/old Canon branded point and shot and use that for a trade in the Canon Loyalty Program and get another 15% off. I did this a my 5D3 was about $2400 out the door.

The only problem is availability, you have to check daily and then act fast. Have your trade in ready also, I had to get mine from Craigslist, I posted a WTB junker Canon camera and cost me $10.00. Check here: http://shop.usa.canon.com …d-eos-digital-slr-cameras (external link)

I will not comment specifically about those two as I have no experience with either. When an Ultra-low price is offered you can expect:

a) Grey market import with a 'US warranty' which normally consists of a consumer type warranty with a company no one has ever heard of, or the 'in house' warranty. In both cases, if you have problems, Canon is not likely to get involved to solve the problem to your satisfaction

b) Bait and switch. You call to find out that this deal is no longer in place, but they will give you another which may sound good (like throw in the EF 35-80 for an extra $400) or something...

c) Try to sell you a bunch of other things and if you steadfastly refuse, the delivery date slips by 2-3 months... On the spot...

If you feel that you can navigate through all this and confirm that they are reputable dealers, it's your decision...

I am not sure I helped...

I am in a similar boat...I saw a slightly more expensive deal with a company that I have done business. I had experience with their hard sell tactics, but they do deliver the product once they close the deal. Reading the ad very carefully, I concluded that they were selling a grey import...

EDIT: The Canon refurbished site shows 5DIIIs for $3299 which is the same as the new price with some goodies thrown in by B&H (+2% gift card)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …A002_EOS_5D_Mark_III.html (external link)

The Canon Loyalty program will get you and additional discount, but at this price it's not a tremendous bargain, don't forget that Canon has to charge sales tax. So for refurbished, you may have to wait for later next year

Now that's the kind of response I was looking for! lol. I've looked at the refurb stuff before, but somehow let that idea slip this time. I will def look at it, and I think I've got an old P&S laying around here that really is junk that I can use.
I would much rather deal with a known source, even if it does cost a few bucks more, but it's hard to justify 7-800 if the playing field is level.

Yeah, I've considered these points, and will not buy grey, and not being "desperate", their hardball tactics won't get far. Thanks for the feedback.
I'm heading over to Canon's refurb page to check it out, but you're right, the sales tax will prob offset the loyalty discount, so the "savings" doesn't look to be that great.

Just checked the Canon site. The $3299 isn't refurb, and they're currently no 5D3's on the refurb page.

If you are going refurbished at the Canon store (which I highly endorse ), take advantage of the deal that gives you 20% off refurbished lenses if purchases along with the body. You can get some killer lens buys that way.

This site is your friend when online buying:

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Adorama (external link)

Type in ibuysonline and check the result:

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Ibuysonline_com (external link)

They get a 4.67 out of ten. Not very good IMO.

Now check B&H Photo Video:

http://www.resellerratings.com …B_H_Photo_Video_Pro_Audio (external link)

9.61 is a bit better OK?

Adorama? http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Adorama (external link)

9.31 out of 10.

42nd Street? http://www.resellerratings.com/store/42nd_Street_Photo (external link)

9.60/10

Take the advice from MakisM1.

Today i went to Dubai and visited a store to buy a lens, but ended up with that lens and 2xIII too, and i gave him a paper i printed with list of items i am looking for prices.

The 5D3 is one of the items, they give me the price of it at 9725 AED body only, you calculate how much is it under your currency, i can make it 9700 or slightly lower, but i can wait much long and it may go under to 9600AED maybe.

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Ibuysonline_com (external link) does not give generally high rankings from those who purchased from them.

'upselling' may be exemplified (from some retailers) like "I recommend that you upgrade to the kit lens with metal lens mount because the standard kit lens has a plastic mount!", and "the battery will cost another $25", and other such scams...I have run into both of those upsells, when I was looking to buy a new Canon 20D a long time ago!

This site used to be very good - the first place I pointed people at. In the past year its been inundated by "great ratings". I suspect they are put there by the stores themselves.

If you look closely at some stores you'll see dozens of good reviews all with similar wording all entered in the same day or two. In some cases hours apart.

Very suspicious.

I wouldnt trust it any more
