I have a picture of my grandson that I think is worthy of having printed in a larger than 8x10.
Where would be a good place to send it and also would having it enlarged ruin it's clarity?
I dunno maybe it's not good enough to be printed but I rather enjoy it.

That's a great shot and I see no problem with going larger than 8 x 10. What sort of size did you have in mind?

It would go to A3+ with no trouble at all.

Lowner thx, I don't even know what A3 means but 'm wondering if I can just send this image to an online print gallery or something.

Maybe 20x24 if thats not to large? Would you go with a metallic print for B&W?

What size did you take the picture in?

Your 7D's 18 megapixels should be more than enough for big prints.

As to size, well, sure, print as large as you want, view it on-screen at a large size and it should give you an idea as to how a large print should look! Just realize that when viewing a print you will typically be farther away than if you are up close and squinting at your monitor!

As to where to have it printed, well, my "first" recommendation is to whether you have a Costco nearby, since if you do, they are a highly recommended "local" choice.

If not, well, I recommend Adorama as a lab. They have excellent quality and excellent customer service. There are other outlets, people can chime in, but I've become a "fan" of AdoramaPix!

Beautiful picture. YOu did not give the file size, but you actually don't need all that big a file to print larger because of software interpolation. Check out this page: http://help.smugmug.com …mer/portal/articles/93359 (external link).

I print most of my own, but when I don't, I use Bay Photo, which is one of the two labs Smugmug uses for its pro service. I have had consistently good results, and their customer service is quick and good.

If you have a Costco near you I would go through them. You can get their ICC profiles online for their printers. An 8x10 is $1.50, and all of mine have turned out fantastic.

OK, so we have Costco for a local provider, then for an online "lab" we have AdoramaPix and BayPhoto, both of them have excellent reputations!!

The posted picture is the actual size after cropping it the way I wanted but I did save the raw file just in case.

Also look at White House Custom Color and Millers Labs. Both require account setup though, so Bayphoto may be your best bet. I personally avoid Costco.

I wouldn't do a metallic print on a BW shot of a person. In a metallic print certain colors become iridescent and silvery. I have a metallic BW cityscape and it looks kinda cool. But on a BW of a person this effect might look strange to the eye.

Unless you're a photographer. In that case, the viewing distance for a print depends primarily on the length of your nose.

So dang true lol.

I doubt a canvas print would work for a photo like this?

OK, I have to comment on canvas - but this is a personal opinion and not even informed. I am also biased since I generally dislike canvas. A lot.

I was chatting to someone at a local art fair (a landscape photographer) about canvas and the fact it seemed to be reducing in popularity (thankfully IMO). The lady selling prints said she sells nearly all her canvas prints to 'older' people. Although she had a few, it was nice to hear that she didn't like them either for the same reasons I don't like them.

My presumption is that the older folks can't see how soft and fuzzy canvas makes images seem. OK, that's tounge-in-cheek, and rude and some subjects look great on canvas, but IMO definitely not most landscapes nor anything you want to look 'sharp'. Personally I like the sharpness of the water in this shot.

However, you should probably ignore what I wrote. Maybe. Some people like canvas, I think it's best used for shots that don't need to look sharp and are usually somewhat abstract.
