Thank Mod for goderators!

+1

Hopefully this comment won't be in "dead horse" category...

I have quite a few "white lenses" (and also quite a few that aren't...), but I'm still very interested in this lens. I'm not sure it would replace my 100-400mm, but that's the niche I'm looking at: a long zoom for the times I need the focal-length flexibility and good reach. For me the image-quality between 400mm and 600mm will be the deciding factor.

Just don't drop it 3 feet onto the grass, like I did. A new one will cost less than getting it fixed, and you won't have to find the pieces in the grass. Being "a" Canon did not help it. I replaced it with the Sigma, which is optically superior.

But known to have auto focus issues.

I'm not a hater of third party glass but do prefer to use Canon equipment.

I'm sure come January there will be loads of reviews at the usual sites and we'll have a better understanding of the compromises that have been made to get this lens down to the price point on offer.

I don't have much need for such a long focal length but if the reviews are positive I'll probably grab one to have a play with.

I want to see how it compares to the Sigma 50-500 OS, this is wide open at 500mm. I might miss the 50-150 range though, I do use that sometimes. I also use the macro capability of the Sigma.

Easily fixable with a trip to Sigma under warranty. A trip to Canon to fix the AF track flex issue would most likely not be in the warranty period and will cost easily $150 or more.

I am dead keen on this lens if its decent, but if its not crisp/sharp at both ends and have good bokkeh I may pass though.

Can't wait to see some of its work!

In the early shots I've seen, the bokeh looks pretty nice. Most of the shots have been taken at the long end, and that's where I want it to shine. I have plenty of other options if I'm shooting in the 150-300 range, so don't really care how this lens does down there.

So would anyone give up there 100-400L for this lens. I have been looking for an affordable lens with more reach. This could be what I am looking for.

It's way too early to make this decision. Nobody here has held one in their hands not alone take a single picture with it. Time will tell.

Yeah, I think the 50-500 is the main competition of this lens, and I really like the 50-500. I've rented one a couple of different times and taken probably 3000 shots total with it. Not all have been good images, but if I do my part, it will do its job very well. I hope the Tamron does the same.
