I have a Canon G 12. I don't use it much, mostly I use my Pentax DSLR's. When I read this forum, it seems to me that G series cameras don't last that long...or not as much as a DSLR.

Now maybe it's me....I dunno. Mine works fine still....but as said before I don't use it much and I'm careful with it.

Have you had difficulty with your G series breaking down earlier than you would of thought ?

If so....what goes wrong and is it worthwhile fixing ?

Also on the other hand if it's worked fine for years and been used a lot, please let me know.

I'm just trying to gauge how durable the G series is.

Thanks.

My G3 still works although admittedly it has never been used a lot. My friend has a G5 that's still going strong and it has seen a lot of use.

I have one that's been through a motorcycle crash with me, and spent the night below the high tide line and buried in sand that still works after 3 years...it grinds a bit on zoom, but still takes pictures

I have a G9 that still works like a champ. The pic below was taken last weekend with the G9. While it doesn't get the same level of use as my DSLRs, it sometimes spends lots of time waiting in the car (>>100°F in the car in summer). I bought it new in March 2008, and it still works just fine.

I have a G1 on which the up-down function of the 4-way button has packed in but I have worked around that and entered acceptable shots for the POTN challenges occasionally. I also have a G3 converted to infrared, and that works perfectly. So I wouldn't worry about your G-series wearing out as long as you treat it right.

At about 20K in pictures or thereabouts the processor will go. Usually accompanied with faded color and vertical lines running through the pics. At least that is what happened to 2 G12's, from what the Canon tech did not come and say directly. Mostly implied.

If that is true (which I honestly doubt it's that precise) then $500 for 20k pictures sounds like a bargain at 2.5 cents per image.

I believe my G9 is at or near 20K images, and no problems.

Don't get me wrong that is not cut in stone. When I spoke to the Canon tech, I asked them how long the processor normally lasted, they asked me how many pictures had the camera taken, I said with the first one a little over 22K and he responded that is about normal. I asked what is the shelf life of the processor and he said yours was not untypical. So for whatever that is worth. I am not complaining, 20K + in pics including video is a lot of use. No complaints here.

You spoke to a CSR, not a tech. CSRs always make stuff up as they go.

I sure hope not. One of my DSLR's ...a Pentax K10D, bought new in 2007 is very close to 100,000 shutter actuations.

I had a G9 that bought the farm after about 4 years of use. Its a tough little camera. It went everywhere with me. I loved it because it was much smaller than EOS 10D. The lens jammed open and would not close. Apparently its a well known problem on cameras with the motorized zooming. Some bit of grit gets in the gears and thats it. The suggestion was to push the lens back in or send it to Canon for repair. I chose pushing the lens back in and than it worked like a charm after that. I than gave it to a family member. The last time I saw it was still running.

I have had a G3 as my camera of choice since the day of their release, never a fault just flawless performance. I used it for home and work every day until my marriage split up mid last year at which time it went to my wife.
Just about 5 days ago bought a new G12 as the replacement camera ( darn G15 and 16's dont have an articulated screen! And G1-X doesnt have a good macro grrrrr ) so i am very happy with the performance of the G series as having used other peoples over the years their performance is always consistent and rarely has any one in my acquaintance mentioned significant problems.

PS I will also buy a G1-X in the not distant future unless a G2-X is announced, hopefully with improved macro and retained stitch assist and please please please wifi.
Digic 6 for faster af would be good too.
