I am currently stationed in England where it's often cold but gloomy these days. Do you guys esp. Those living in colder climates take photo shoots outside or do you stay in the studio for the most part till it gets warmer?

Yup still shoot in Canada because if we didn't we would only be photographing for few months of the year!! It's a good opportunity for different types of clothing with great textures and accessories such as scarves. A little fill flash never hurts either. Rain does suck though.

The family has to dress properly for photos. Usually they don't want to be wearing big bulky coats, so they wear lighter coats and jackets to try to keep warm, but not bulky ;)

Do you have them bring an extra jacket that they take off before the shoot, or do you tell them to wear something that they can be comfortable outdoor for an hour or so? Thanks for your input.

I'm a studio shooter when it's too cold, but I do love winter images with big coats and beanies !

I've shot in -25 before. (Edmonton, Alberta, CAN) I usually let the client know that we will be outside 10-15 mins and then go to the vehicles to warm up then go out again. When it's cold outside you have to be quick and get the job done, the client will appreciate that. ;)

Usually people bundle up with layers and scarves. The cold can make for beautiful pictures you just can't take a stroll like you could in the summer time.

-25... now that's brave :). Sounds like a great idea with keeping warm in the vehicles. Though it's going to be harder to do that in England. But at least we're still above 0 degrees.

Problem is the UK is just so wet.. it's either foggy, misty, mizzly, raining cat's and dogs etc, wet weather gear is not photogenic and driving mizzle just makes everyone keep their heads down and running for the nearest shelter. When the sun comes out everything is so soaked no one wants to be outside.. you just end up churning up the garden and bringing most of it indoors on your wellies.

You have to wait for those cold crisp moments, and we haven't had those for a while (was a very nice day today, first for far too long.. I think the last decent crisp morning we had was back in October.. it's been a dire this winter)

We'll get a break in the weather at some point, then we can play again.

If you are going in and out of warm vehicles, how do you deal with condensation on your lenses? (pardon my ignorant question. :))

I've never had condensation on my lenses so I don't worry about it. Usually when we go back to the cars they have already cooled off and are cold inside and then it warms up slowly. Maybe that helps? It's not like going into a warm environment right away.

It's not an ignorant question lol. Condensations never been an issue for me. :)

The best way to deal with it is to take a zip bag or sealable box.. put the gear inside the bag/box before going into the warm

(I do astrophotography.. I get water running off my scope when the due is coming down.. RH > 99%)

Thanks for the tip. Does the condensation then form on the bag instead? I recently did a shoot in the cold (not a people shoot) and got condensation when I got back in the car. https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1353327

I do have several packets of silica in my bag for moisture absorption.
