I usually at least place most of my photos on the map in LR5. I have a small GPS logger that I use to geo-tag occasionally but I usually forget to bring it (or can't figure out if it's actually working as it only has a couple of blinking lights to tell you the status).

Neat way to see where you've been and see the holes of where you still need to see.

Here's a map from LR5 of where I've been shooting. Decent spread but I would love to fill in more and hit some other continents too. Lots of incredible places out there that I'm lucky enough to catch a few glimpses of because of all the great people sharing here.

How about others, what does your map look like?

I've been geotagging since at least 2009; I'm using Google Earth and/or Geosetter (external link) (which uses Google Earth) to backfill earlier photos. I carry a regular GPS receiver (currently a Garmin eTrex 30) clipped to the camera bag so there's no forgetting it, and have Canon's GP-E2 sitting in the hot shoe of the EOS M which lives outside that bag. "Live" tags cover from Alaska to the Galapagos and all over North America. Back-tags include chunks of Europe.

I like Geo-tagging my photos when I'm out but using the little logger I have is pretty cumbersome. How does the GP-E2 work for you? It inputs the coordinates, etc directly into the EXIF as you shoot so there's no extra steps, correct? It does seem like it's a 1 trick pony though and outside of geo-tagging, it's not used for anything else (I guess it can be used as a receiver for Laptop or ? via USB but why?)

I like the idea of having a decent GPS dedicated in the camera bag, I've tried smart phones but it always just not quite as good as it should be and the batteries don't last.

Great, here I am looking at more gadgets...

I've been looking at the Canon unit. Is there anyway you can still use a flash with the Canon unit or PW flash triggers etc?

Geo-tagging. I'm an ex Yachtmaster Offshore sailing Instructor so have much experience of latitude and longitude on charts for navigational purposes but have never understood why photos need this information added. After all, as the person who took the shots, I have a vivid memory of the locations in each and every case.

It'll automagically (on supported cameras) embed lat., long., altitude and (except for the 7D) bearing into the EXIF. If you need to use both flash and gGP-E2, it'll feed the data into your USB port (again, supported cameras; this is the only way the 7D will accept it). Basically, I think the 7D's the oldest Canon to support it; I'm not sure if the Rebel line do at all (never looked). It'll also log tracks for (using Canon's Map Utility) tagging photos from Canon cameras other than the one you've mounted it to. It might also do JPEGs from other brands that way; I haven't got other brands to try. It can also set your camera's clock. But agreed, it doesn't do a whole lot beyond tagging photos. I carry the eTrex for general flexibility.

Yep. Mount the flash to the hot shoe and use one of the (supplied) USB cables to connect the GP-E2 to the camera. In fact, the USB cable route is the only one the 7D accepts.

Ever been motor touring? I've got photos I could locate via Google Earth, and others that I wouldn't have a prayer of finding again, even with my pre-GPS method of using a P&S to photograph street signs at regular intervals. Especially if someone else was driving. I'd much rather have the info and not need it than the other way around.

Yeah, but will they let you see the results? Or do you have to ask Edward Snowden?
