I like Geo-tagging my photos when I'm out but using the little logger I have is pretty cumbersome. How does the GP-E2 work for you? It inputs the coordinates, etc directly into the EXIF as you shoot so there's no extra steps, correct? It does seem like it's a 1 trick pony though and outside of geo-tagging, it's not used for anything else (I guess it can be used as a receiver for Laptop or ? via USB but why?)
I like the idea of having a decent GPS dedicated in the camera bag, I've tried smart phones but it always just not quite as good as it should be and the batteries don't last.
Great, here I am looking at more gadgets...
It'll automagically (on supported cameras) embed lat., long., altitude and (except for the 7D) bearing into the EXIF. If you need to use both flash and gGP-E2, it'll feed the data into your USB port (again, supported cameras; this is the only way the 7D will accept it). Basically, I think the 7D's the oldest Canon to support it; I'm not sure if the Rebel line do at all (never looked). It'll also log tracks for (using Canon's Map Utility) tagging photos from Canon cameras other than the one you've mounted it to. It might also do JPEGs from other brands that way; I haven't got other brands to try. It can also set your camera's clock. But agreed, it doesn't do a whole lot beyond tagging photos. I carry the eTrex for general flexibility.

I've been looking at the Canon unit. Is there anyway you can still use a flash with the Canon unit or PW flash triggers etc?
Al
Yep. Mount the flash to the hot shoe and use one of the (supplied) USB cables to connect the GP-E2 to the camera. In fact, the USB cable route is the only one the 7D accepts.

Geo-tagging. I'm an ex Yachtmaster Offshore sailing Instructor so have much experience of latitude and longitude on charts for navigational purposes but have never understood why photos need this information added. After all, as the person who took the shots, I have a vivid memory of the locations in each and every case.
Ever been motor touring? I've got photos I could locate via Google Earth, and others that I wouldn't have a prayer of finding again, even with my pre-GPS method of using a P&S to photograph street signs at regular intervals. Especially if someone else was driving. I'd much rather have the info and not need it than the other way around.

I subscribed to a service offered by the NSA to do this for me. Its free.
Yeah, but will they let you see the results? Or do you have to ask Edward Snowden?
