I absolutely love the ability to control the 6D through any WIFI-capable Android device using the 6D's built-in ad-hoc WIFI network.

The only problem is that I think my phone, the Samsung Galaxy III, may not be the best device to use with it. The issue is battery life. I guess since I use it as my every day phone, by the time I get out for an afternoon of shooting, it is already at 70-80%. A couple of hours in the field and it is down to 20-40%.

I am thinking of getting a dedicated device to use to control the camera. Any recommendations? Ideally, something field-portable and with a long enough battery life to be able to be taken on multi-day shooting trips. I guess hoping to go a week without charging is unrealistic in this age's electronics, but maybe 24-48 hours? Or maybe with cheap and easily-switchable batteries?

I was considering the Nexus 7, mainly because of its size and price. I seem to come across lots of complaints about its battery life (6-7 hrs heavy use tops), though, and I think its battery is non-removable.

24-48 hours on any device with that kind of screen is somewhat unrealistic. Best bet would be to disable unnecessary radios on your phone and get a usb battery pack for it.

This should charge your phone from empty 3-4 times at least at a fraction the cost of a tablet. Should easily get your 24-48 hours of usage. (I use something similar but smaller when I travel; put both in my pocket and don't worry about battery life over extended periods)

Second the poster above me, look at a usb charger to recharge your phone for a lot less then a tablet.

Did not even know that such things existed. This is great --- thanks for pointing it out!!

And it will come in handy in sooo many other contexts.

Now I just need to look for a device that can run for 4-8 hours (to be conservative) of heavy usage. Don't know if the Galaxy III can do that, but maybe if I shut off GPS, 4G etc. WIFI, obviously, has to stay on ...

Doesn't absolutely *have* to be. But I would sooooo definitely prefer it. In any case, I cannot imagine that the options and performance and value of the any iPod would not be easily met and exceeded by some Android device or another (I love Apple products as much as the next guy, but recognize that we are paying a premium for the operating system over the hardware; I don't mind OS X, but infinitely prefer Android to IOS).

If you want long battery life get a Motorola device, especially a model that has Maxx in the name. My Razr HD great battery life although probably not much different than your GS III, the Razr HD Maxx blows it away.

Assuming you drive your own car, get car dock so you phone charges on the way to the location(Motorola again makes this easy as the sell OEM model specific docks at reasonable prices). Not that you can't just charge it without a model specific dock but it's easier to just drop into a dock and you won't every forget to plug in the charger(assuming you just leave the dock plug in).

As mentioned, there's also external packs.
