Hey everyone, I just bought a brand new 1DX. Received it yesterday. I have a couple questions regarding the battery. The battery reading seems to be very inconsistent. It will show, say 92% and then I'll check it again and it will read 88%. Once I powered the camera up from sleep and it showed 58%. I checked again a minute or 2 later and it showed 47%. The battery doesn't seem to last too long either. I have a second brand new battery that I charged last night. I popped it in the camera last night... took a couple of shots and then replaced it with the other battery. It read 98 or 99%. Now, just about an hour ago, I thought I'd test the battery (see if it's doing the same thing as the other.) Sure enough it is; very inconsistent. Also... the battery read 87%.... it was practically fully charged last night. Whats going on???
Thanks

What lens are you using. Sounds like something is draining it much faster than it should. I've heard stories that certain lenses may drain camera batteries excessively.

Assuming you have more than one lens, you should just test the theory out. Charge the battery, change to a different lens, and check throughout the day to see if the battery is draining just as fast. If it happens with ALL your lenses, than it seems to me the camera body is the issue. IF it's only with one particular lens, then the lens is the culprit.

Do this if you just got the camera, charge the battery FULLY and then check it, you might have a bad battery.

Thanks for the reply. I've been using it with a 70-200 ii. IS on. Unfortunately I only have one other lens which a friend is borrowing.

Is it normal for the battery to be inconsistent like I've explained? Battery % goes up and down too. My 5D3 doesn't do this. I will turn the camera on... It'll say 45%. I'll snap a few shots and it'll be like 41%. I'll let it go into auto sleep and turn it back on and it'll jump back up to say 46%

I have two brand new bartteries that I fully charged. They're both doing the same thing. Like I said in the OP, one of the batteries was at 98 or 99% last night. When I tried it today, it had dropped to 87%...

Using two batteries on my 1Dx and have never had this problem. If both batteries are doing it I wonder if it's something in the camera that is draining them.

Quit looking at the battery level and shoots some pictures!! Isn't that why you bought a $7000 camera?

BTW, shut off the "view pictures after each picture taken" feature. The lcd takes up a lot of power.

Sounds strange. I have two Canon batteries and they seem to last forever. Not sure on the fluctuations as I only use the small icon to check battery life. Sounds like your checking detailed info through the menu option.

Note that the battery supervisor chip needs to learn the battery performance.

So the supervisor chip may initially show incorrect information.

Hopefully, you'll get better status readouts after you have fully charged it, drained it and then fully charged it again.

The battery behavior that you describe seems odd. On the other hand, the 70-200 will drain the battery noticeably faster than other lenses. Also, the battery life on the 1DX is less than e.g. the 1DIV.

What pwm2 said...

Note that the battery supervisor chip needs to learn the battery performance.

This was my case with one Canon battery and one 3rd party battery acquired well after the camera purchase. In both cases I was ready to blame the battery but stuck with them until they went through several discharge/recharge cycles, after which they were fine. One has to remember that this is not sticking D-cells in a flashlight. There is a great deal of communication between the camera body and battery, all accomplished to optimize the battery performance.

I use the 70-200 ii. IS on on my 1DX all the time and for extended periods and while shotting sports rapid shooting. I have not had a problem with my battery draining. Are you having any other issues?

If I remember right I had a similar issue when I first got my 1DX. Never got round to doing anything about it, and the battery works fine now. I think what people are saying about the calibration issue is probably right. Just charge/discharge it and carry on using it and see what happens.

notastockpikr - stupid thing to say. When you've spent that much on a brand new camera you want it to work properly.
