I'm on a budget about 80$-100$. Has anyone used this lavalier before? I video record automotive tutorials at home and sometimes, there are vehicles going back and forth at my neighborhood and you can hear the background noise, I'm trying to use a lav mic to prevent that.

Do you guys have any other suggestions for a Lav Mic? thanks.

as a professional sound editor / sound recordist i think these things are a joke. there are no shortcuts to good gear. if you have traffic near by no mic will get rid of it. i would suggest timing your takes to fall in between traffic or voice overing the tutorials if you can't change locations.

I bought 1 and I find the quality is a joke. The pin broke and the sponge came out...iPhone recording was ok. After things start falling apart I didn't really get to use it more. Does it really pin to the shirt? I mean its so fragile....

I just started using today, everything was intact, but I had a problem with the volume being so low in recording but I figured out what happened so it's not a big issue. Overall I liked it better than my on camera mic, so I'll stick to this until I save up enough money for a 500$ lavalier mic.

The Giant Squid (external link) lav mic gets great reviews. It costs $40. Search for it on YouTube.

I just checked the Giant Squid lav sound output. It sounds exactly like my Rode SmartLav mic using my iphone Rode Rec Apps.

I see the only difference is that the Giant Squid plugs into a recorder while the Rode SmartLav plugs into the Iphone.

Also the Rode SmartLav will have hissing noise and some static noise depending on where you're recording it at, so you'll need to tinker with the settings in an audio program.

As a professional sound editor/sound recordist I am sure you will agree there are significant advantages in proximity. A modest lav can often give very acceptable audio because of its proximity to the sound source. While it won't necessarily omit ambient noise it is likely to be less noticeable than using a mic placed at a greater distance.

Quality is seldom cheap but an adequate lav might produce more acceptable audio than an expensive mic at a greater distance subject to the environment.
