I know you can control from the flash menu a 430 EX II (I have 2 and control them via the popup flash).

I set the flash in ETTL slave mode and then I control them as manual from the Flash menu.

For the older flash (420/430 EX), I don't know

You can fire the 430ex, the older model via the popup.

You can set the 430ex in slave mode and trigger it with the popup flash from your 600D. If you want a radio trigger so you do not have to have line of sight, you can get a cheaper transceiver set that does not support TTL so you'd have to go manual for about $30, or you can get a set of transceivers that let you use TTL and and also control the flash through your camera menu manually to adjust the power without having to walk over to your flash.

Some triggers that support ETTL are: http://www.amazon.com …6&sr=1-2&keywords=yongnuo (external link)
Some triggers that are manual only but will fire the flash are: http://www.amazon.com …6&sr=1-3&keywords=yongnuo (external link)

The transceivers listed above come in a pair, so you would use one on the camera as the transmitter and one on the flash as the receiver. If you needed one for both the 420 and the 430, you can get a three pack instead of the two pack I linked.

I'd go with a Yongnuo flash and a set of Yongnuo YN622Cs, I was disappointed with the flash commander on my 7D.

For the price/value I'd look at Phottix Mitros. I'm interested in getting one next after some reviews from Dave the Strobist guy.

I don't know about the 600D. My 60D controls 2 groups (A:B) of flash guns just fine. I use a 580EX II, 2-550EX and a 430EX II. Indoors you do not need line of sight access between the camera and the slaves. Canon's optically fired flash-master system works really well, even when the slave is hidden behind furniture, on the floor under a table, or even in another room, if it is close enough (and the door is open.) Make sure the free stuff doesn't work for you before spending any money on radio stuff.

The 622Cs are so damn cheap I'd suggest picking up a set. Worst case, you are out 30$ for a wireless remote shutter, which is very handy. Best case, you'll have a much more reliable way to trigger off camera flashes. I (like most) tried the optical triggers and found them frustrating. Back when it was 100$+ for the radio stuff and you needed to buy several sets to fire a few flashes, I'd be doing a lot more optical today. But now it's 30$ for the set of 2, and it's about 10$ more to get a YN model with it built in, it seems almost silly not to try some out.

Sorry, I said 622, I meant the 603s. The 622 are the ETTL ones that are 100$, the 603s are the cheap ones.

I am now just thinking of getting just the flash as its mainly macro that im into and I will just mount the flash on the hot shoe and fashion an extended diffusor to reach over my lens.
thanks for the advice and I will bear it in mind if I want to get more kit and get more flash units.
