As the title says please post your favourite picture you have taken this year and why?

I'll go first. Try and follow this format

A Journey in life (external link) by jonneymendoza (external link), on Flickr

Caption:
I climbed a mountain in the Philippines with just a pair of flip flops. it was difficult and a struggle as i was carrying all my camera gear with me and tripod as well. Just like my journey to the top of the mountain to get this shot, it is like a journey in life. You will have things that will weigh you down. things that give you a disadvantage but if you continue to climb and move forward in life, you will be rewarded.

Reason:
Both the journey to even take this picture as well as how the actual image came out easily becomes number 1 pic i have taken this year by a long shot.

Many of my other pics only required a tiny effort just to go t a particular place and take it but this was hard. Climbing a small mountain in flip flops in 30c temperature with a backpack full of my heavy lenses and camera(5d3, 70-200f.28, 16-35 f2.8) is no easy task and the view as you can see was breathtaking!

Great photo and caption! Thx for sharing. I am awaiting my new used 5Dc to arrive tomorrow. When i receive it I will see if I can capture an epic shot like you have and share it here :)

I like the topic. Even if 2013 isn't over yet, some photogs may be done shooting for the year and spending the rest of their time with friends and family.

Happy holidays, ho ho ho!

Thanks and pretty much what you described.

So what if 2013 is not over? Not like you have only today to post your pics and be done with it lol but me personally i am done with photography for the year and just going to prepare for my epic long awaited solo adventure trip with just my camera gear and spare clothes, to VIETNAM!!

This is the last photo of a year long human interest project where I interviewed 52 different people from a wide swath of life and had them all define the same word and talk about how if affected their lives. I'm in love with this photo as a stand alone moment, however, it represents the completion of a project I've wanted to do for a little over 2 years. The symbolism of that project coming to completion combined with what, IMHO, is a fantastic photo, this is the most important photo I took in 2013.

That is a tough one this year but this one wins. I normally prefer candid shots but this woman posed so gracefully. Taken during the March of Brides event in San Francisco.

Kokedera in Kyoto, Japan

The peaceful serenity I captured is great, the natural lighting is breathtaking, and the fact that this was 17-55mm 650D handheld is impressive.

Picking a best photo is kind of hard. Honestly I'm never really happy with anything I've taken so far, but I don't mind as it just means I still have room to improve and explore more.

I think the one that stands out the most in my mind is this. Taken at the Slay of Fundy in St. John New Brunswick this spring. I managed to catch the most epic bit of air time and one of the hardest hits of the season.

This hit was in the first corner, while I was laying down on the slab in the next corner, and could clearly feel the impact when she came down.

I've taken a lot of shots I'm happy with this year. My best year in the hobby by far, but this one that i just took tops the list and sums up a great year. I moved back west where i love, explored a lot and reignited my passion. This is a self portrait watching the sun rise over an epic landscape.

To be continued....

What a great topic. Picking just one seems impossible. This was definitely breakthrough year for me. I learned a lot about exposure and have become much better at framing my subject when shooting. I'm developing an eye for quality and an eye for beauty and light. I have a long way to go, including finding my own unique style, but I'm finally beyond intermediate. I'm not good on the fly yet, but when I plan and take my time I can bring my vision to life. I'm a lot better at processing and editing now as well.

This photo isn't so much a high quality photo as it is a piece of an experience. I was able to meet all but a couple of the actors from The Walking Dead, and I snuck into the press area to take photos (by snuck in I mean that I just happened to be at the right place at the right time, standing in a group of photographers I didn't know we're press and we were herded into a room, so I just went with it).

This particular photo is special to me because I instigated the action. I asked Norman Reedus to "give me a salute," and he did (it's kind of his trademark, the middle finger. It's all in fun). So I took the shot.

This particular photo was cropped heavily and I played with it in photoshop and Topaz Adjust.

Several of the cast from The Walking Dead:

My favorite for this year is this shot at Sol Duc Falls in Olympic NP.

We got to this area late. I thought I had read that it was about a .3 mile walk in.
It's actually about a .8 mile hike.
I'm a getting a bit older, have had a knee fixed up a few times, and hadn't run in about 4 years.
I ran most of the .8 of mile.
I stopped one time to get a shot of a rambling stream.
When I got to the falls, I still had light, but I didn't have a tripod.
So I held the camera on the railing of the walking bridge and got this shot.
For a 54 year old guy with one knee, that just ran what felt like a marathon,
to take a one time, hand held, 1/4 second shot, I think I did OK.

This won't be the best shot in this thread by a long shot, but it's the best one I have this year.

I'm definitely at the learning stage, and there aren't many photos of mine that I like a lot. I like this one a lot for its composition, its use of color, and its suggestion of human activity and the passage of time (someone was here, did something purposeful, and will return) without showing human figures.

This is my favorite photo taken in 2013 thus far, and possibly my favorite photo since taking up the hobby. I spent a year teaching English in South Korea with my girlfriend and it was possibly the best experience of our lives.

It gave us the opportunity to travel South East Asia when our year of teaching came to an end. We never though we would ever get the chance to travel that part of the world, let alone for a whole month. This was taken in the ancient capital of Thailand, Sukothai.
