So many outstanding images to be proud of, congrats to all.

I settled on this one based on the setting, the fact that it was a first time encounter with an Eastern Screech Owl and NAT GEO gave it a nod which was an honor. The entire series taken had a variety of studio-like lighting due to sunlight cast through openings in the large Oak tree the bird chose for shelter.

Amazing shot. You're right about the lighting, it works really well

Probably not the best but is by far my favorite. It was taken at a very mystical place: Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. This was shot inside a well. There are some crazy dark tunnels that lead this well to other places in the Quinta. As I was leaving and climbing the stairs after taking not very interesting photos, a group arrived and started to perform some kind of ritual just for a few seconds. Luckily i got the shot.

I don't know what they were summoning but that was pretty cool stuff to watch.

I love this composition of such an interesting place. It takes my eye from the top left and into the spiral. I would have loved it even without the ritual, but that is just the icing on the cake.

I really like the way the lighting came out on this one, and the posing fills the frame really well. This was my first time using LED lighting instead of flash for the key light.

This was probably my favorite and least favorite photo from this year.

It is my least favorite because I took this photo after my grandfather passed away this year, but it is my favorite because each piece has a story and each story reminds me of his life.

Some great pictures here, and even better stories. Love the owl shot (spectacular), and the 'nice view' (I yearn for some hiking like that!). Here's my one for the year:

I like it because for me it really captures childhood but in an almost posed and formal way (which I find you can hardly ever get with a young child no matter how hard you try). It was a delightful bedroom in a delightful house and reminds me of the whole shoot which yielded quite a few favourites. It was towards the end of the year too, and makes me feel I have made some progress!

Struggling to choose a definitive best, but I like this one as taking and processing it was a good use of otherwise wasted time stuck in hospital...

My grandfather was 92.5 at the time. Do it, it would mean the world to him if he was close.

Nighthound, Claire, thank you both very much...just got back from an 'expedition' with my new Canon G1X---and had complete failure! But we learn by doing.

I didn't have as much opportunities to get out and take pictures as I would have liked in 2013 (hoping to change that in 2014) but I did manage to get a few decent pictures, this is one of them. This is High Falls at Grand Portage State Park in Northern MN.

I have a lot of photos I like looking at, but these three I seem to really enjoy. Maybe not the "best", but certainly a few of my favorite...for obvious reasons I hope!

Here is my pick. Perhaps not my favorite or best (in terms of lighting, etc) - but I hiked up with a buddy for 5 hours to get to this location to avoid all the crowds and I wanted a different perspective of Rainier. All uphill nonstop for 6 miles :)
