The iconic fountain, at the intersection of Liverpool Street and the Brooker Highway, Hobart was out of service for about a decade.
Fences were erected around the site, pedestrians diverted and workmen rolled up their sleeves.
Almost $220,000 in extensive repair work was needed to freshen up the site and restore the almost 50-year-old hydraulic and electrical systems back up to working order.
A fountain design competition was held in the 1960s and Hobart local Geoff Parr was one of a group of three whose entry was chosen.
Geoff says in the group he was the concept designer, Vere Cooper was the draftsman and Rod Cuthbert was the engineer.
Many passers-by have been heard to remark that the fountain looks like an alien spaceship which has crash landed in the city.
