The Metrodome will host its final event next week. It will soon be demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art stadium. As a salute to this much-reviled facility, let’s post our images of the events it has hosted and the stadium itself.
In the past 30 years, the Metrodome was home to the Twins, Vikings, University of Minnesota, and the Timberwolves during its inaugural season. It has hosted 2 World Series, a Super Bowl, an MLB All-Star game, 2 NCAA Final Fours and several regional rounds. The NFL records for the longest play (Antonio Cromartie and Cordarrelle Patterson), longest play from scrimmage (Tony Dorsett), career touchdowns (Brett Favre), and single-game rushing (Adrian Peterson) were set at the Dome. In 1999, kicker Gary Anderson missed his only field goal of the season at the Metrodome – the NFC Championship Game.
The Metrodome is known by many nicknames: the Dome, the Roller Dome, the Thunder Dome, the Homer Dome. For years, the Twins had a sign that proclaimed, “We Like It Here.” No one knows why.
After the Dome is gone, we will still talk about the roof collapse, the hurricane-force winds at the exit doors, the narrow concourse, the baggie in right field, the troughs in the men’s rooms and the smell of last year’s bratwursts that never goes away.
Thanks for the memories, Metrodome.
