Can someone walk me through some very generic settings to start with using lets say 1 or 2 canon 580ex flashes on stands on a canon 7d in high speed sync mode outdoors. Lets say using one as a key light and one as a rim light or even a clamshell setup. I'm using yongnuo ettl triggers.

im referring to setting camera flash controls in menu and on flashes.
master/slave mode etc etc? Im not sure there are others who could benefit that are just too shy to ask. so I'm asking.

I appreciate all your help, there are videos out there but nothing as specific as I'm asking

HSS eats power so it's impossible to give you some settings, as each shutter speed over max sync costs you more than a stop of flash power. How bright a light are we talking about here? What sort of look are you trying to achieve?

Let say high noon sun at 100iso. I understand increasing shutter and controlling DOF, I'm looking to learn to control speed light settings etc

The menus are easy, just re read the manual. But if you think you are going to compete with noon sun with even two speedlites you are going to be disapointed.

I dont mean to terse or dismissive. Its just that HSS is marketed as removing the limits of shutter speed when it comes to flash, and its only partly true. At noon on a bright day, you are looking at F16 at ISO 100 and 1/100 shutter speed. Going to max sync gets you to F11 (actually f10 for a 7D but I'm trying to stay with full stops here for counting sake). So getting to 4 means your shutter speed is up to 1/200 thats not much time for the flash to pulse. Your better options are to use an ND filter to allow you to slow the shutter down and still maintain your DOF.

I think I know what you're trying to do. While I haven't tried to over power the sun, I have shot nice fill flash portraits at 1/1000 @ F2.8 using YN622C and 580EX II with HSS bouncing off an umbrella late in the afternoon. Yes, HSS robs power but as long as you're not exceeding what the 580 has to give, it's all good. The 622s make it really easy. Just set the 580 the same as if it were on the camera, mount the 622s and shoot.

7D, 50 f1.8, 17-55 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 II, 100-400 f4.5-5.6L, 2x TC III, 580EX II, 430EX, 568EX II, 622C

Going into HSS with the 580 will have a loss of power of over 2 stops (it's been a while since I did the test, but I think you're pushing a loss of closer to 3). Mr. Golf knows of which he speaks. You're going to have to get close, and I mean real close to the subject and be using a very efficient modifier if any. Softbox ain't gonna work.
