Looking at photos on Flickr I sometimes see a photo that was taken the day before and already has 16,000 views. So how is that possible? It's not to say they aren't worthy shots, and sometimes not that great but I was just curious. I'm happy with my 79,000 plus in 2 1/2 years. Merry Christmas to all.

They get on the "explore" list and end up moving into the top ten. I've had a photo get 30,000 views in 24 hours. I think it's all random for the most part.

Also, since the big change earlier this year, an image is 'viewed' when part of a wall in whatever category (Explore, Groups, Contacts, etc.) and scrolling down a screen. So an image doesn't have to be clicked on and viewed individually to be counted as 'viewed.'

It's sometimes frustrating for sure. I've resigned myself to the fact that sometimes it's just a simple popularity contest and to not take it personal. Some people are better at networking than others, and the internet moves fast. I would be ecstatic to make it on Explore and i see some photogs get multiple multiple photos on Explore. it keeps me motivated.... Maybe one day.

Yep, explore will do that. The good photos (even if they are incredibly cliche) tend to rise to the top in explore which leads them to get quite a bit more activity than other images; even other images in explore that day.

Now I know why I get so many views. Just today I got over 1600, and my shots are pretty average - nothing artistic or great.

Maybe flickr did this on purpose, a way of stroking egos.

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.

I don't really know if that's the case. I know overall traffic to flickr went up considerably after the initial makeover. If you go to explore and look, you'll see some images that get a huge amount of traffic while the ones right next to them have only modest traffic, this despite both being next to each other in the days "Explore"; meaning that whenever someone goes to explore both images thumbnails will be on their screens at the same time.

Thanks ; ) Same to you! I think the best thing by far I've taken away from flickr is making contacts and the community (much like POTN) that you can interact with. On my travels I've even scheduled meetups with some of my contacts that I've met through flickr. I really try not to focus on view counts or spamming multiple groups but instead just interacting with people and getting inspiration ; )
