My old printer IP4500 was not working anymore so I had a look at the new printers and I was suprised to discover that on the new printers canon proposes now 2 sizes for ink cartridges : standard and XL.
The standard ones contains 7 ml of ink while the XL ones contain 11 ml.
The problem is that the cartridges of my old printer IP4500 contain 13 ml !!!
So they have almost reduced by half the ink volume while keeping the same price and they try to hide this by introducing XL cartridges which are still smaller than the standard previous ones !!! This is really not honest.

Furthermore, with the multifunction printers, you can not use the scanner if there is no ink !!! imagine if you can not use your car because the radio is out of order ! What would be your reaction ?

I'd like to say to canon, stop this strategy. Don't think that customers are not aware of all of this. Selling 7 ml of ink for more than 10 euros, knowing that lot of the ink is used to clean the heads not for printing is purely outrageous. Don't be surprised if more and more customers will use compatible ink, starting by me...

Funnily enough, I'm in a similar situation, also using an iP4500. I'd like to upgrade and been considering the Pro-1, but the thought of feeding the thing... jeepers.
And indeed, the size disparity with the newer carts is a bit disappointing really - who do they think they're fooling?

7... 11... 13ml? Yikes, and I was debating whether or not to get the Epson 3880 with it's ($50) 80ml ink carts. Extrapolating 10 euro over 80ml you get $112! that's more than twice the price.

And the Epson 4900 carts are $87 for 200ml, that's vs. $125 for the same amount in 80ml inks, or 43% more expensive!

As always, if you're serious about home printing, always buy the biggest printer you can, it'll be cheaper in the long run unless you want to dabble with constant ink systems.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Been using Cone Inks in my Epson 3880 for over two years, HUGE savings on ink costs. You may have problems finding refillable carts and pigment inks for a lot of the printers.

I ordered boxes of ink for our Pro-100 from B&H and saved significantly. I ordered boxes of ink for our Pro-1 on Ebay and saved $100 per box compared to the prices at B&H, Adorama..etc. There were indeed cheaper 3rd party inks available. But for now, I will stick with Canon inks.

PRO 100 carts are bigger than the ones on my ip4920 and you can buy the printer for about $100 after rebates. Take a look at the PRO 100.

Most every manufacturer is doing the same thing, and it's not just printer inks.

Conveniently smaller package, new higher price. I like Labatt Blue. Their bottles mysteriously became 11.5 ounces one day instead of the industry standard of 12 ounces. Same size bottles mind you. Now, a case of their beer nets out to 23 bottles instead of 24. And, surprise surprise, the price increased.

I now buy something else.

Went to the grocery the other day, left with one bag and $50 less in my wallet.

But hey, the economy is doing great.

I've just noticed that the Epson own label ink carts for my R2880 have come down in price this year. At one time they were £12, but are now £11.10 each. I buy them from OYYY.
