On Christmas eve day I was driving around the back (delivery area) of a supermarket and saw a bird on the road in front of me. At first glance I thought Robin as it had a prominent red brest, then then it turned away from me and I saw it was blue on the back and wings. When it took off into the sun light the blue was like the blue on a indigo Buntin. When I got home I looked it up and found it to be a Eastern Blue Bird a first for me. Further reading said they were uncommon and had been in decline for the last 25 years.
I would be interested in any other sightings by members, excited at the thought that I may see it again and get a photograph.

Yeah, unfortunately they are in decline, due among other things to nesting competition with starlings (with the bluebird losing). Starlings of course were introduced by that idiot in the 1800s who wanted to have every bird species mentioned in Shakespeare in North America.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

That's where those little buggers came from. There are several birds that are in decline. Some have a cause pinpointed and others don't.

I see a trip to Tennessee in my future. What time of the year are they seen?

Early Spring when nesting and they are still here....I suspect they winter here. It's very common for folks to put bird boxes on fence posts.

Here's a male bringing food to its young in a hole in that fence post..
