As was already pointed out, there is an endless supply of educational material freely available on the Internet. That should suffice for anyone who is disciplined and motivated enough to do self-study.

If you're looking to spend money -- and get your money's worth -- then highly recommend taking an in-person class or two at your local community college or university. I agree, get a real education (not an online 'photo degree' !)

As was already pointed out, there is an endless supply of educational material freely available on the Internet. That should suffice for anyone who is disciplined and motivated enough to do self-study. The problem for a beginner is that the "endless supply" is mostly junk. The internet has an overwhelming amount of YouTube videos and blogs created by "experts" who just figured out which side of the camera to point at the subject, bad information in forums, and commentary designed solely to garner hits rather than inform by the likes of Hogan and Rockwell. A rank beginner faces a difficult task separating the good advice from the bad and will waste a lot of time and effort doing so. Taking a class or workshop, online or in person, from an established, reputable source is a much more efficient way to learn the basics.
