This sow had a collar/transmitter on her neck for several years now, she spends her summer months along the Chilkoot River near Haines and winters over a mountain range 30 to 40 miles from town. When I shot this pic she was about 2 mmiles outside of Haines on the Chilkoot .

This bear gave us many photo ops as it came to the Chilkoot river hungry and spent a lot of time in front of us Salmon fishing.

Nice shots. You ever feel threatened by them?

mike325, I would say that we were in two uncomfortable situations, once in Denali and once on the Chilkoot River near Haines. In Denali it was late evening at the Eielson visitor center, my bus was next to last out of the park and we had just unloaded for our break when a large male came toward us huffing and blowing. There were 5 Rangers there and very sternly telling everyone to either go inside or board a bus. The bear passed within 3 feet of the front door checking everything out. IMO, he had smelled food, it was his territory and we were in his way. When I saw 2 Rangers take out their spray and 2 others on the roof it left no doubt that they were worried too. Both times though there were too many people not allowing the bear enough room and not understanding the warning signs of a wild animal. Both situations turned out well and no one or bears were harmed.

Wow Steve! You were very close to those bears. What a great experience to be that close to them. Some memorable pics here. Thanks for sharing.:)
