shakin, your shot does show the special effect a ring could provide, even it's a bit too close to judge the the full potential. I am sure you could take better ones once you have time.

I know, i just took this shot just to see if it worked and it was the only one I had to show. I hope to have some real pics soon.

Not trying to be over critical here, but with the shot of your dad, reflectors would have certainly achieved a much better result if properly used.

Different result I'ld say.

RandyMN wrote:
You see the light reflecting directly back at you and the rings in his eyes?

That's probabely because a ring flash was used :p

RandyMN wrote:
Just my opinion, but these ring flashes don't always work well in portraiture unless balanced with other light and used creatively..

True, I'f you're looking to get a beautifully lit portrait. JAF Doorhof posted some nice images a while back in the glamour section I think. I don't think that was the object of thiss test however...

RandyMN wrote:

I couldn't disagree more. A direct flash would give much harder shadows, and quite a different texture.

Alright, I didn't get a real test yet, but here is 100% crop of my eye, where you can see the flash. With the flash on auto you can see that it doesn't quite get all the way around the ring. I guess if I would increase the power a bit, it might.

Yes, although sarcastically stated, a ring flash was used without good results.

True, I'f you're looking to get a beautifully lit portrait. JAF Doorhof posted some nice images a while back in the glamour section I think. I don't think that was the object of thiss test however...

There are good and bad ways of using any kind of lighting and rules are good but always can be broke with great results. I did not see great results with this first test and whatever the purpose was I did not see success until the last shot of the eye.

I couldn't disagree more. A direct flash would give much harder shadows, and quite a different texture.

I still say at that from the distance this shot was taken, not much change from using a direct flash with a bit of diffusion compared to the ring light would have been noticed. What is the purpose of a ring light? To achieve a nice smooth directionless lighting. It's not worth an argument so we'll just have to disagree here.

And BTW Shakin360,

the last shot I think worked out very well! I might have been critical of the previous shots, but not for what you were trying to achieve or for the creativity you showed in creating the light.

Hey Shakin,

If you're looking for another project, try this one out and let us know how it goes. I'm on my way to Radio Shack to put up the parts to do this. My Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro just came and I can't wait to get it a shot.

I know...sorry to keep you suspense. I feel bad, I've been so busy I haven't even touched my camera this week. :-(

wow good job puttin it together, but isnt it rather impractical?

Seems heavy and large. Most important thing is the result. Any real life photos?

Good job once again! :D
