Welcome to the World Ryan! Christmas came early for me this year. Rachel and I welcomed our 1st child into the world on 12/23/13 @ 10:24pm. Our worlds have forever changed for the better and I cant wait to experience every future moment.

I dont often take images of people but i think all that is about to change. Leading up to the birth I purchased a set of Yongnuo 622 flash triggers and Manfrotto Flash stand. I tried to take a bunch of test shots and got to a point where I was happy with the lighting. I did get a little advise from Pro Phrotographer Miro Celic (thank you if you read this!). I know i could use a 2nd flash or a reflector to get ride of some of the shadows but overall i am happy with the result.

Any advise or criticism is welcome.

Put him in front of good window lighting and avoid bright lights/flash into newborn sensitive eyes.

Congrats on your new baby; my son is also Ryan :)

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Since you had editing on, I tok a shot at this. Here's my 10 minute take at it:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Redirected to error image by FLICKR

NotMineWebEdit (external link) by ShaneOhMac (external link), on Flickr

Edit: they always look a bit different after posting, I would dial back the vignette a bit if I did it over.

I politely disagree with the use of flash. While I would never aim it full power directly at the newborn, if diffused it can be used fine. Bounce it off the ceiling or use a big soft box.

that looks great! would you mind sharing what you did with the edit.

As for the flash. I read so many different things. Its about 50/50 on flash or no flash with newborns. All of my shots were off camera bounced off a white ceiling.

I used the tone curve in LR to lift the shadows, I used the brush to apply some clarity to the box and blanket only. Exported to Photoshop to use hue layer to get rid of reds, some skin smoothing with portratuire, then back to LR to export to jpg. Would be better results with raw file
