I'm curious - what do you guys think is the best Canon lens? Don't worry about subject, worry about IQ, color, sharpness etc. I'm just interested in what y'all think!!!

It really all depends on what you're going for. My faves are:

Canon 135mm f2….magical

Sigma 50 f1.4…most underrated Canon lens. UNREAL…and less than $500!!

I like gear and I have too much.

Everyone is going to say 70-200 F2.8 II.

Well, I'm going to bet.

Very best,

If we are talking about superlative terms here, the correct answer is:

Canon EF 200mm f/2 L IS USM.

This question comes up from time to time. If you really ignore the intended purpose and things like cost or weight etc.....basically if you are looking just at color, contrast, sharness, distortion, CA, vignette....the 'best' performing lens will be one of the supertelephoto primes.

200/2
300/2.8 IS II
400/2.8 IS II
500/4 IS II
600/4 IS II
800/5.6 IS

About the only competition would be the 17 or 24 TS/E.

People will suggest lenses like the 85L II or the 135L, but in an objective measurement these will not prove to be as good as the supertelephotos. People just don't think of these in the 'best' discussion because relatively few people own them compared to 'cheap' lenses like the 85L II, 135L and 70-200 IS II.

Of course.....if you need a wide angle, I'm not sure what use this is to know.....

I would agree in most instances - rented it and loved it - best way to discover what you need rather than rolling the dice is to as mentioned, determine what you want to shoot then rent the lens or lenses and make an educated decision.

I don't know, but certainly something I don't own.

But for me the TS-E 17mm. It is one of the main reasons I wouldn't swap to Nikon D800, even if it didn't cost me anything.

I don't think so..... the one with me (that I used today) is the 35mm f2 (old version).
