Two kinds, a few inches apart, on a sawn tree stump.

Great shots both.

Ray; I would say it is something like shaggy inkcap, if cut it should provide a thick black juice.

It's been fine weather for fungi.

Another stump, another two colonies:

This last variety grew on our damp potting bench. It's purplish black, and it looks like bundles of floppy matchsticks about 5 mm tall.

Wow that is a great selection there Oh Look, the variety in your potting shed is very unusual.

Thank you, Lester. In December, the potting bench is shaded all day, perhaps allowing random spores to take hold.

Returning to the potting bench today. Looky looky, a pink colony emerged since yesterday!

These resemble the dark ones from yesterday except for color. Each finger is attached to the wood by a black, threadlike stalk. A close-up:

They grew where, a few days ago, a different fungus took hold. This predecessor fungus was white and in the shape of small, fuzzy balls or mounds. The white material collapsed and formed puddles of white goo, some of which is seen around the base of the pink fungi. Perhaps the pink fungus is parasitic on the white one?

Such gorgeous images here! Breath taking! Now I wish I had captured the clump of solid black srooms I saw about a week ago.

Originally posted December 23, 2014; edited and moved to the present post to allow showing the photo: The pink fungus, it turns out, is identical to the previous day's purple-black fungus. It's just younger. Two hours later, the specimens above were almost as dark as those in the shot taken on December 22. Here's an image of some of the fungus from yesterday, showing more clearly its black stalks. The tallest bundles are about 8 mm high, including stalks.

An update (Dec. 28) on this cluster: The fingers (fruiting bodies) are curving downward and shedding spores, which accumulate on the wood and look like superfine cocoa powder.

Searching revealed that this organism is Stemonitis fusca (external link), a slime mold. Slime molds are no longer classified as fungi, but I'll leave them here, since we've come this far together.

Well done the ID. See a few slime moulds but not as interesting as that. They are normally little pink blobs:

Wolf's Milk Slime Mould, Lycogala terrestre (young version with orange or peach coloured plasmodium oozing out)
