I hope this question isn't too basic, but I am pulling out what little hair I have left! I recently updated from LR 4 to 5.3. When I was running LR4, I could right click on any photo (CR2 or JPEG) in my Windows Photo Library and it gave me a choice of either Elements 11 or LR4 as the go to editor for that photo. Since I have gone to LR 5.3, that option is no longer shows in my Windows Photo Library, and I am having a heck of a time trying to add it. How do I add LR5.3 as an optional editor? Any help would be appreciated!

Try this...

Right click on any CR2 or JPEG, select Open With, then select Choose Program. Find the LR 5.3 executable within C:\Adobe\Lightroom\wherever, and select Open. This will make it available as an option in Open With in the future and I suspect might add it to your options in the photo library as well. However, I can't offer first-hand experience as I don't use the Photo Gallery.

Well, in Windows Explorer, if you right-click on a photo, you have the option to "Open With"...and then one of the options in the drop-down list is to "Choose Default Program" and you can "Browse" to LR5...does that help?

Make sure you UNselect "always open this type of file with this program" option, as this modifies the default program that launches when you double-click the file (unless you want to modify that as well).

Thanks for your help. I tried these things, but when I click on Browse, it doesn't seem to recognize LR 5.3 as an option and won't open it up.

What do you mean it doesn't seem to recognized LR 5.3 as an option?

You're right clicking on a CR2 file, selecting Open With -> Choose Default Program. When the window pops up, you are UNselecting the "Always use the selected program..." option, then clicking Browse. If you have LR 5.3 installed, just browse to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom 5.3\ folder (or wherever the specific install folder is for you, depending on 32 or 64-bit version and Windows version), select the lightroom.exe file, click Open, and then OK.

Are you doing that?

I was having trouble setting PSE as the default editor for JPEGS. Someone pointed me to this small free program that does what it says on the tin.... Types - allows you to customize the way Windows handles different file types: set program associations, change icons, context menus and other properties. http://izt.name/apps/types/ (external link)

Yup. And when I click on Lightroom 5.3 to open it, nothing happans, nada! I am at work right now, but I'll give it another go in the morning and report back. I want to make sure I actually have an exe. file to click on.

I actually don't use Explorer to open images, I just start Lightroom and use it as my image browser...
